Where Is New Hope, PA / Getting There

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

New Hope sits along the Delaware River in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, directly across the bridge from Lambertville, New Jersey. One of the reasons New Hope has become such a popular weekend destination is its location. It feels far enough away for a getaway while still being an easy drive from New York City, Philadelphia, and much of New Jersey.

Janice, our daughter, and I drove down from Jersey City for a long weekend, and the trip took about an hour and a half with light traffic. The drive is straightforward, and once you leave the highways behind, the roads through Bucks County are part of the appeal.

Most visitors arrive by car. Street parking throughout downtown is metered and accepts cash, credit cards, and the ParkMobile app. The Union Square lot is usually the easiest option, and on busy weekends the New Hope-Solebury High School lot also opens to the public. Once you’ve parked, you can leave the car behind. Nearly all of New Hope’s restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions are within walking distance.

Approximate driving times:

  • New York City: ~1.5 hours
  • Jersey City / Hoboken: ~1.25 hours
  • Philadelphia: ~1 hour
  • Princeton, NJ: ~45 minutes
  • Baltimore: ~2.5 hours

DOWNTOWN

Logan Inn

Logan Inn is the best choice if you want to stay right in the heart of New Hope. Located just off Main Street, it puts restaurants, bars, shops, and the Delaware River within easy walking distance, making it easy to settle in and explore the town on foot.

Exterior of Logan Inn in New Hope PA with snow covered grounds string lights and the historic 1727 sign

Established in 1727, Logan Inn is one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the country, but the atmosphere feels more modern boutique hotel than historic inn. Its 38 rooms are individually designed with bold artwork, rich colors, and eclectic touches that avoid the traditional colonial look many historic properties lean into.

The hotel is also home to Landmark Tavern and the Whiskey Lounge, one of the best spots in town for a drink. The lounge features a wood-burning fireplace, leather chairs, a piano, and an extensive whiskey selection that makes it a destination even for people who are not staying overnight. Downstairs you’ll also find a pool table, cigar lounge, and a small movie theater with vintage marquee lighting.

We’ve stopped in several times, and it’s one of the places that gives New Hope much of its personality. Even if you stay elsewhere, it’s worth visiting for a drink or dinner.

RIVERFRONT

River House at Odette's

River House at Odette’s is one of the most scenic places to stay in New Hope. Located on the Delaware River just south of downtown, it offers river views and a quieter setting while still being within walking distance of Main Street, restaurants, bars, and shops.

The 38 rooms have a contemporary, design-forward feel with tufted leather headboards, floral murals, rainfall showerheads, and, in many cases, private balconies overlooking the river. The hotel is also home to Odette’s, one of the best restaurants in New Hope PA and a popular choice for both brunch and dinner. The outdoor riverfront patio is one of the best places in town to dine by the water, with views of the Delaware River that are especially nice at sunset.

Other highlights include the Piano Lounge, which regularly hosts live music, and ROOF, a rooftop bar overlooking New Hope and Lambertville. Guests can also borrow complimentary bikes to explore the Delaware Canal Towpath.

For couples, anniversaries, and special occasions, River House at Odette’s is one of the most memorable hotels in New Hope.

Ghost Light Inn

Ghost Light Inn is the smallest and most intimate hotel in New Hope. With just 12 rooms, it feels more like a boutique inn than a traditional hotel. Eight rooms have Delaware River views, and several feature Juliette balconies overlooking the water.

The property sits directly on the riverwalk next to Bucks County Playhouse, putting you within easy walking distance of Main Street’s restaurants, bars, and shops while still offering a quieter setting than many downtown accommodations. Rooms include Tempur-Pedic beds, sound machines, minibars, and in-room espresso machines in select suites. A complimentary continental breakfast is included each morning.

The on-site restaurant, Stella of New Hope, is one of the better dining options in town, serving a seasonal American menu alongside craft cocktails and local beers. Guests also have access to a three-season outdoor space with a fire pit, overhead heaters, and river views that make it a pleasant place to unwind after dinner.

Rates typically start around $300 per night, making it one of the more expensive places to stay in New Hope. For couples celebrating a special occasion or anyone looking for a quieter boutique experience, it’s easy to see why it has developed such a loyal following.

Beyond the hotels, New Hope has several excellent inns and bed and breakfasts that appeal to couples looking for a quieter and more personal stay. If you’re specifically searching for a bed and breakfast in New Hope PA, there are several good options within walking distance of downtown.

Olivia’s Bridge Street Inn is a well-regarded canal-side bed and breakfast with a historic setting and an excellent location near Main Street. Inn at Bowman’s Hill offers a more secluded experience on five private acres just outside town and is a popular choice for couples, anniversaries, and weekend getaways.

For travelers on a tighter budget, New Hope Lodge sits about a mile from downtown and offers a mix of cabins and traditional guest rooms at rates that are often lower than those found in the center of town. If you’re visiting with family or a larger group, VRBO also has a good selection of rental homes in and around New Hope that provide more space and flexibility than a traditional hotel room.

Best Things to Do in New Hope, PA

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

For a relatively small town, New Hope offers a surprising variety of attractions. Within a few blocks you can catch a show at Bucks County Playhouse, ride a historic railroad, walk or bike along the Delaware Canal Towpath, browse independent shops, and enjoy views of the Delaware River. Add nearby attractions like Peddler’s Village and Washington Crossing Historic Park, and there is more than enough to fill a weekend.

The list below covers the best things to do in New Hope PA, from the attractions that define a first visit to a few spots that are easy to miss if you don’t know where to look.

Bucks County Playhouse

Bucks County Playhouse

If you enjoy live theater, Bucks County Playhouse is one of the main reasons to visit New Hope. Located right on the Delaware River in the center of town, it is one of the most historic regional theaters in the country and has hosted an impressive roster of talent over the years, including Grace Kelly, Dick Van Dyke, and Robert Redford.

Today, the playhouse presents a full season of musicals, dramas, and comedies featuring a mix of Broadway veterans and emerging talent. Even if you don’t attend a performance, the riverfront setting makes it one of the most recognizable landmarks in New Hope. If your schedule allows, though, catching a show is one of the easiest ways to elevate a weekend visit. bcptheater.org

New Hope Railroad

Red New Hope Railroad caboose C-127 in the snow at the New Hope train station in Bucks County PA
New Hope Railroad

The New Hope Railroad is one of the best things to do in New Hope with kids, but adults will enjoy it too. Trains depart directly from the historic station in downtown New Hope and take passengers through the Bucks County countryside on a restored heritage railroad that dates back to the late 1800s.

The standard excursion lasts about 45 to 60 minutes round trip and follows a scenic route through farmland, forests, and small towns that you would never see from Main Street. Depending on the season, the railroad also operates themed rides including fall foliage excursions, holiday trains, and special events such as wine and cheese tastings on the Grapevine Express.

Even if you are not a train enthusiast, the experience is more about slowing down and seeing a different side of Bucks County. Families tend to love it, but it never feels like an attraction designed only for children. www.newhoperailroad.com

Bucks County Children's Museum

If you’re visiting New Hope with younger kids, the Bucks County Children’s Museum is one of the better indoor activities in the area. Located along the Delaware River near downtown, the museum features hands-on exhibits focused on local history, science, engineering, and the culture of Bucks County.

The exhibits are designed for children to interact with rather than simply look at, making it a good option when kids need a break from walking around town. It’s also a useful rainy-day activity and easy to combine with other attractions in New Hope.

Most families will spend one to two hours here, making it a worthwhile stop but not something that typically fills an entire day. buckskids.org

Ghost Tours of New Hope

If you’re looking for something to do after dinner, the ghost tours are one of the more unique evening activities in New Hope. These lantern-led walking tours explore the town’s long history of ghost stories, haunted buildings, and local legends while taking visitors through the historic downtown streets after dark.

The tours cover everything from phantom hitchhikers to supposedly haunted inns, mixing local history with a healthy dose of storytelling. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, it’s an entertaining way to see a different side of New Hope and learn a little more about the town’s past.

Most tours last around 90 minutes and work especially well on a Friday or Saturday night when downtown is already buzzing with activity.

Delaware Canal Towpath

For a scenic walk, bike ride, or a break from the crowds on Main Street, the Delaware Canal Towpath is one of the best free things to do in New Hope. The path runs directly through town alongside the historic Delaware Canal and stretches for nearly 60 miles through Bucks County.

You don’t need to tackle the entire trail to enjoy it. Even a short walk south from downtown offers peaceful canal views, shaded paths, and a quieter side of New Hope that many visitors miss. The trail is flat, easy to navigate, and popular with walkers, runners, cyclists, and dog owners.

Early morning is my favorite time to visit, before the shops and restaurants fill up for the day. Whether you’re looking for exercise, a place to walk the dog, or simply a break between meals and sightseeing, the towpath is an easy addition to any New Hope itinerary.

Best Things to Do Near New Hope, PA

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

One of the best things about visiting New Hope is how many worthwhile attractions are located just beyond downtown. From neighboring Lambertville, New Jersey, to historic sites, wineries, and family-friendly destinations throughout Bucks County, there is plenty to see within a short drive.

Most of the things to do near New Hope PA listed below are within 20 minutes of town and work well as a half-day outing. If you’re staying for a full weekend, pairing time in New Hope with a visit to Peddler’s Village, Washington Crossing Historic Park, or one of the area’s wineries is an easy way to experience more of the region.

Peddler's Village

Brick pathways and charming shops at Peddlers Village in Lahaska near New Hope PA
Peddler's Village

Peddler’s Village is one of the most popular attractions near New Hope and an easy addition to any weekend itinerary. The 42-acre village is home to more than 60 independently owned shops, along with restaurants, a brewery, chocolate shops, gardens, and seasonal events that draw visitors from across the region throughout the year.

Unlike a traditional shopping center, Peddler’s Village is built around brick pathways, landscaped gardens, and locally owned businesses selling everything from specialty foods and home décor to artisan goods and gifts. Even if you’re not planning to shop, it’s a pleasant place to spend a few hours walking around and grabbing lunch or a drink.

We visited during the holiday season, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. The village goes all out for Christmas with elaborate light displays, market stands, and seasonal decorations that make it one of the best places to experience the holidays in Bucks County. If you’re visiting New Hope in November or December, it’s worth checking the events calendar before your trip.

Giggleberry Fair at Peddler's Village

Restored 1922 antique carousel at Giggleberry Fair inside Peddlers Village near New Hope PA with ornate painted horses and gold canopy
Carousel at Giggleberry Fair

If you’re visiting New Hope with young children, Giggleberry Fair is one of the best rainy-day activities in the area. Located inside Peddler’s Village, it combines a beautifully restored 1922 carousel, a large indoor playground, arcade games, and a toddler play area, making it easy to spend a few hours here when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

We ended up here during one of our trips to New Hope and Jacqueline loved it. Between multiple rides on the carousel and time in Giggleberry Mountain, the six-story indoor climbing structure and obstacle course, it was one of the highlights of the weekend for her. Parents can relax with a coffee or drink from the Painted Pony Cafe while the kids burn off some energy.

Because everything is indoors, it’s an easy backup plan for rainy weather, and it pairs naturally with the shops and restaurants at Peddler’s Village once everyone is ready for a change of pace.

Wine Tasting Near New Hope

A wine tasting flight of three red wines at New Hope Winery
Wine Flight at New Hope Winery

If you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon activity, wine tasting is one of the best things to do near New Hope. Bucks County is home to a well-established wine trail, with several wineries located within a short drive of downtown offering tastings, live music, vineyard views, and seasonal events throughout the year.

Whether you’re interested in a quick tasting flight before dinner or spending a few hours exploring the countryside, there are plenty of options nearby. See the full wineries section below for my favorite wineries near New Hope and Bucks County.

Cross the Bridge to Explore Lambertville, NJ

Exploring Lambertville is one of the best things to do near New Hope and one of the main reasons a weekend here feels bigger than a typical small-town getaway. Located just across the Delaware River, the town has its own personality, with antique shops, art galleries, independent restaurants, and a quieter pace than New Hope.

Getting there is easy. Simply walk across the bridge connecting the two towns and you’ll be in downtown Lambertville in less than five minutes. Many visitors end up spending time in both places, grabbing lunch or dinner in Lambertville before heading back to New Hope for the evening.

We’ve always found the combination works well because the towns complement each other. New Hope tends to be livelier, while Lambertville feels a little more relaxed and residential. If you have the time, I would strongly recommend exploring both. Lambertville is also one of my favorite weekend getaways from NYC and worth a visit in its own right.

Washington Crossing Historic Park

For some American history, Washington Crossing Historic Park is one of the best attractions near New Hope. Located a few miles south of town along the Delaware River, the park preserves the site where General George Washington and the Continental Army crossed the river on Christmas night in 1776 before launching the surprise attack on Trenton, one of the most important moments of the Revolutionary War.

The 500-acre National Historic Landmark includes historic buildings, walking trails, river views, and exhibits that help bring the story to life. Highlights include the Thompson-Neely House, McConkey’s Ferry Inn, a replica Durham Boat similar to those used during the crossing, and Bowman’s Hill Tower, which offers sweeping views of the Delaware River and Bucks County countryside.

The park is especially worth visiting in 2026 as the United States marks its 250th anniversary with special exhibits, events, and commemorative programming throughout the year. Guided tours are available seasonally, and the park also connects to the Delaware Canal Towpath if you’d like to combine history with a walk or bike ride.

Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve

If you’re looking for a quiet outdoor escape, Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve is one of the best nature-focused attractions near New Hope. Located a few miles south of town, the preserve spans 134 acres of native Pennsylvania wildflowers, meadows, forests, and walking trails along Pidcock Creek.

Spring is the most popular time to visit, when the wildflowers are in bloom, but the trails are enjoyable throughout the year. The preserve offers a completely different experience from the shops, restaurants, and crowds in downtown New Hope, making it a good choice if you want to spend some time outdoors.

It’s not the type of attraction most visitors plan an entire day around, but it works well as a peaceful morning walk or a relaxing break during a longer weekend in Bucks County.

Fonthill Castle and Mercer Museum

If you enjoy unusual architecture, local history, or quirky museums, Fonthill Castle and the Mercer Museum are well worth the short drive to Doylestown. Located about 20 minutes from New Hope, the two attractions were created by Henry Mercer, an archaeologist, tile maker, and collector whose influence can still be seen throughout Bucks County today.

Fonthill Castle was Mercer’s personal home, a sprawling concrete mansion with 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces, more than 200 windows, and handcrafted ceramic tiles covering much of the interior. Guided tours last about an hour and offer a fascinating look into both Mercer’s life and the unconventional home he created.

Just down the road, the Mercer Museum houses more than 40,000 pre-industrial American tools and artifacts spread across multiple floors. The collection provides a unique glimpse into everyday life before the Industrial Revolution, covering everything from farming and transportation to crafts and trades. Special exhibits rotate throughout the year, including a 2026 exhibition focused on the Doan Gang and Revolutionary War-era Bucks County.

Together, the two attractions make an excellent half-day outing and are among the best rainy-day activities near New Hope.

Wineries Near New Hope, PA

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

Wine tasting is one of the most popular things to do near New Hope, and Bucks County has several wineries within a short drive of downtown. Whether you’re looking for a scenic vineyard, live music, or a relaxed afternoon tasting flight, there are plenty of options nearby.

New Hope Winery

Exterior of New Hope Winery red barn with stained glass grape door and open sign in Bucks County PA
New Hope Winery

New Hope Winery is the closest winery to downtown New Hope and the best choice if you’re looking for wine, food, and live entertainment in one place.

Located in a restored 18th-century barn just outside town, it combines wine tastings with concerts, food, and a lively atmosphere that makes it feel more like an evening destination than a typical winery.

The property is home to The Note, a 250-seat music venue that hosts tribute acts, local bands, and touring performers throughout the year. The Tavern serves wine flights, craft beer, cocktails, and a full food menu, making it easy to spend several hours here. If you’re visiting on a weekend, check the event calendar ahead of time as popular shows often sell out.

Buckingham Valley Vineyards

History is part of the appeal at Buckingham Valley Vineyards, one of Pennsylvania’s oldest farm wineries. Founded in 1966, it was one of the state’s first farm wineries and remains one of the largest producers in Bucks County.

The winery produces reds, whites, rosés, fruit wines, and the county’s only naturally fermented sparkling wine, which was once selected for a James Beard Foundation dinner. Free tastings and self-guided tours make it one of the more approachable and affordable winery stops near New Hope.

Crossing Vineyards

Crossing Vineyards has a classic Bucks County wine country experience, with vineyard views, estate-grown wines, and regular live music. Located just south of town in Washington Crossing, the property combines estate-grown wines, vineyard views, and regular live music events in a setting that feels removed from the bustle of downtown.

The winery sits on a historic estate less than a mile from where George Washington crossed the Delaware River in 1776. Tastings, seasonal events, and weekend entertainment make it an easy place to spend an afternoon, whether you’re a serious wine enthusiast or simply looking for a relaxing outing.

Wycombe Vineyards

Wycombe Vineyards offers a quieter and more rural wine tasting experience than most wineries near New Hope. The family-owned vineyard sits on a 22-acre farm in Furlong with outdoor seating overlooking the surrounding countryside.

The wine program includes 18 varietals ranging from dry reds and whites to sweeter wines and a port, while the dandelion wine has developed something of a local following. Wycombe also produces its own spirits, including gin, whiskey, and rum, giving visitors more variety than most wineries in the area. Open Friday through Sunday, it’s an excellent choice for a relaxed afternoon away from the crowds.

Best Restaurants in New Hope, PA

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

Dining is one of the main reasons to visit New Hope. For a relatively small river town, the restaurant scene is remarkably diverse, ranging from casual brunch spots and historic taverns to riverfront dining and upscale restaurants suited for a special occasion.

The restaurants below are my favorite places to eat in New Hope PA, whether you’re looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails, or a memorable meal overlooking the Delaware River. From a weekend brunch at Karla’s to dinner at Odette’s or The Salt House, these are the restaurants in New Hope PA that I would prioritize.

Karla's

Karla's

Brunch is the reason most people come to Karla’s, and it’s one of the best breakfast and brunch spots in New Hope. The restaurant has been a fixture on Mechanic Street since 1978 and has built a loyal following by consistently delivering good food in a relaxed setting.

The open-air patio and sunroom are the main draws on a nice day, offering some of the best people-watching in town. The menu is creative without being overcomplicated, with dishes like Bananas Foster French Toast, multiple Eggs Benedict variations, and a rotating quiche du jour. The cocktail program is equally popular, particularly the fresh fruit margaritas and house specialties.

Karla’s also serves lunch and dinner, but brunch remains the main attraction. If you’re visiting on a weekend, reservations are a good idea.

The Salt House

The Salt House

Atmosphere is what sets The Salt House apart. Housed in a stone building dating to 1751, the restaurant feels more like a colonial-era tavern than a modern dining room, with low ceilings, exposed stone walls, and a fireplace that becomes the focal point on colder evenings.

The downstairs bar and dining room are lively and often crowded, but my favorite spot is the upstairs library lounge. Dark, intimate, and slightly hidden away, it has a speakeasy-like feel that makes it one of the most memorable dining spaces in New Hope. If possible, request a table upstairs.

The menu focuses on elevated pub fare built around seasonal ingredients, with dishes like smoked haddock chowder, short ribs, crab cakes, and scallops frequently appearing as favorites. The cocktail program is strong, the wine list is extensive, and the overall atmosphere makes it easy to see why The Salt House is often considered one of the most romantic restaurants in Bucks County. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.

Odette's

Odette's

For riverfront dining, it’s hard to beat Odette’s. Located at River House just south of Main Street, the restaurant sits directly on the Delaware River and offers some of the best views in New Hope. The outdoor Overlook patio is the place to be on a nice day, while the Piano Lounge provides a cozy alternative with live music and a large stone fireplace.

Odette’s serves breakfast daily and is also one of the most popular brunch spots in New Hope on weekends. The brunch menu goes well beyond the basics, with dishes ranging from chicken and waffles and biscuit sliders to steak benedict and a full lobster roll. If you’re celebrating or simply feeling indulgent, there are also larger-format options like seafood towers designed for sharing.

Dinner shifts into upscale steakhouse territory with prime cuts, fresh seafood, and a strong cocktail program. It’s one of the more expensive restaurants in town, but the riverfront setting and polished atmosphere make it a popular choice for special occasions. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.

Landmark Tavern and the Whiskey Lounge combine to create one of the best dinner-and-drinks experiences in New Hope. Located inside the historic Logan Inn, the spaces complement each other well, making it easy to start with cocktails, settle in for dinner, and then move to the lounge afterward without ever leaving the property.

The restaurant offers several distinct dining spaces, including a glass-enclosed colonial porch, a cozy fireside room highlighted by a stained-glass installation from a local artist, and a tented outdoor patio that is ideal for people-watching on busy weekends. The menu focuses on seasonal American fare made with locally sourced ingredients, with options ranging from small plates and craft cocktails to full multi-course dinners.

After dinner, the Whiskey Lounge adds another layer to the experience. With a wood-burning fireplace, leather seating, a piano, and an extensive selection of spirits and cocktails, it feels like a completely different room while still being part of the same evening. If you’re looking for a place where you can spend an entire night without bar hopping, Logan Inn is one of the best options in New Hope.

Stella of New Hope

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

For an upscale dinner with river views, Stella is one of the best restaurants in New Hope. Located inside Ghost Light Inn on the Delaware River, it offers a more intimate and refined atmosphere than many of the town’s other dining options.

The dining room features large windows overlooking the water, cozy booths, a gas fireplace, and an outdoor deck that is especially popular during the warmer months. The menu focuses on seasonal ingredients sourced from regional farms, with dishes changing throughout the year while maintaining a strong emphasis on seafood, poultry, and locally inspired American cuisine.

One detail that diners frequently mention is the bread service, which typically includes several house-made varieties before the meal begins. There is also a 12-seat bar with a smaller menu if you’re looking for cocktails and a lighter bite rather than a full dinner.

Reservations are recommended on weekends, particularly if you’re hoping for a table on the deck.

RIVERFRONT | DATE NIGHT | SEASONAL MENU | UPSCALE | OUTDOOR DINING

Martine's RiverHouse

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

For a relaxed meal with one of the best river views in town, Martine’s RiverHouse is hard to beat. Located directly on the Delaware River along Ferry Street, it’s one of the few restaurants in New Hope where you can dine right on the water without the more upscale atmosphere of places like Odette’s or Stella.

The menu focuses on seasonal American cuisine, with options ranging from NY strip steak and scallops to pasta dishes and several vegetarian choices. The cocktail program is also a strong point, with a lineup of award-winning drinks that are worth ordering whether you’re stopping in for lunch, dinner, or just a drink by the river.

The outdoor deck is the main attraction and offers some of the best waterfront dining in New Hope. Outdoor seating is first come, first served rather than reservable, so it’s worth arriving early if sitting outside is important to you, particularly on weekends.

Ferry Market

Ferry Market

When everyone wants something different, Ferry Market is one of the easiest dining options in New Hope. Located on South Main Street, the food hall brings together several vendors under one roof, serving everything from Mediterranean and Peruvian food to pizza, coffee, and Brazilian specialties.

The atmosphere is casual, with indoor and outdoor seating that works equally well for a quick lunch, a snack between activities, or a relaxed meal without committing to a full-service restaurant. It’s also one of the better options for families or groups that can’t agree on a single cuisine.

A few other restaurants worth considering include GreenHouse New Hope, a popular choice for brunch and lunch, and OldeStone Steakhouse, which serves steaks and American fare inside a converted church across from Ghost Light Inn. The dramatic dining room alone makes OldeStone one of the more memorable restaurant spaces in town.

Best Bars in New Hope, PA

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

New Hope has one of the best nightlife scenes of any small town in the Northeast. A long-standing LGBTQ community, a deep live music culture, and a growing craft beer scene give the town far more variety than most destinations of its size. Whether you’re looking for live music, craft beer, cocktails, or a late-night crowd, there are plenty of good reasons to stay out after dinner.

Havana

If you’re only going to one bar in New Hope, make it Havana. Part restaurant, part live music venue, and part late-night gathering spot, it has long served as the center of New Hope nightlife.

Located on South Main Street and open daily until 2 a.m., Havana hosts a steady lineup of live music ranging from rock and blues to tribute acts and local performers. The outdoor seating remains popular year-round thanks to heaters and fire pits, making it one of the few places in town where you can comfortably sit outside with a drink even in colder months.

For visitors looking to experience the energy of New Hope on a Friday or Saturday night, this is usually where I would start.

John and Peter's Place

John and Peter’s opened in 1972 as a coffee shop with live music and has been going ever since, which makes it the oldest continuously operating music club in the country. That alone is worth knowing, but what makes it worth visiting is that it has never tried to be anything other than what it is.

It’s a slightly ramshackle, royal blue dive bar on South Main Street with a small back room stage, framed photos of musicians covering the walls, and live music seven nights a week.

It has hosted Norah Jones, Ween, George Thorogood, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Arlo Guthrie over the years, and the energy of the room has not changed much since. The kitchen runs until midnight, the beer is cold, and the patio fills up in warm weather. If Havana is the polished anchor of New Hope nightlife, John and Peter’s is the soul of it.

Doubles by Human Robot

For craft beer, Doubles is one of the most interesting spots in New Hope. The concept combines a taproom from Philadelphia brewery Human Robot with a trading card shop, creating a space that feels equal parts neighborhood beer bar and collector’s hangout.

Human Robot is widely regarded as one of the best breweries in Philadelphia, particularly for its lagers, pilsners, and other traditional beer styles. The New Hope location offers seating along the Delaware Canal Towpath, making it one of the best places in town to enjoy a beer outdoors.

Whether you’re opening packs of baseball cards or simply working through a flight of craft beer, Doubles has a laid-back atmosphere that stands apart from the rest of New Hope’s nightlife scene.

The Cub Room

The Cub Room is the heart of New Hope’s LGBTQ nightlife. New Hope has one of the most established and welcoming LGBTQ communities in the region, and The Cub Room is the social anchor of that scene. Located on West Bridge Street, it is an inclusive bar open to everyone but built specifically around the LGBTQ community and its allies. The vibe is relaxed and unpretentious, with creative cocktails, a dog friendly patio, and a social calendar that includes drag shows, bingo nights, acoustic sets, and the legendary seasonal Tea Dances on the patio that have become one of New Hope’s signature events.

Nektar Wine Bar

For wine, whiskey, and a quieter atmosphere, Nektar is one of the best bars in New Hope. Nektar sits directly across from Bucks County Playhouse on Mechanic Street and is one of the more underrated spots in New Hope for a drink.

It is a wine, beer, and whiskey bar with a tight Mediterranean inspired small plates menu built around locally sourced ingredients, the kind of place where you order a charcuterie board and a glass of something interesting and settle in for longer than you planned. The wine selection is curated and award winning, the whiskey list is serious, and the staff knows both well enough to actually help you choose.

The patio has canal views and is worth sitting on in warmer months. As a pre or post show stop before Bucks County Playhouse it is essentially perfect, but it works just as well as a standalone evening without any agenda at all.

Best Time to Visit New Hope, PA

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

Fall

Fall is the most popular time to visit New Hope, and for good reason. The combination of the Delaware River, historic towns, covered bridges, and the surrounding Bucks County countryside makes October especially beautiful when the foliage peaks. Travel + Leisure even named New Hope the top fall foliage destination in the country. If you’re planning a fall weekend, book accommodations well in advance as hotels often fill up during peak foliage season.

Spring

Spring is my second favorite season in New Hope. Wildflowers begin blooming at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, temperatures are comfortable, and crowds are generally lighter than in summer or fall. It’s also one of the best times of year to walk the Delaware Canal Towpath, explore downtown, and enjoy outdoor dining before the busiest tourist season begins.

Summer

Summer brings the busiest restaurant patios, outdoor events, and longest days for exploring the area. Main Street can get crowded on weekends and parking becomes more competitive, but the town remains lively and enjoyable. If your schedule allows, weekday visits tend to be noticeably less crowded than Saturdays and Sundays.

Winter

Winter is quieter, but New Hope remains active throughout the holiday season. Peddler’s Village hosts some of the region’s best holiday displays, restaurants stay busy, and fireplaces at places like Logan Inn and The Salt House make cold-weather visits especially appealing. For visitors who prefer fewer crowds and lower hotel rates, winter can be an excellent time to visit.

Suggested Weekend Itinerary

If you’re using this New Hope PA travel guide to plan a trip, I recommend spending two days in town. You’ll have enough time to explore downtown, spend time in Lambertville, enjoy a few great meals, and visit one or two nearby attractions without feeling rushed.

Day 1

Arrive in New Hope late morning and head straight to Karla’s for brunch. Afterward, spend a few hours exploring Main Street, browsing the independent shops and galleries, and walking a stretch of the Delaware Canal Towpath.

In the afternoon, cross the bridge to Lambertville and wander along Bridge Street. The two towns complement each other well, and it’s easy to spend a few hours moving between shops, restaurants, and coffee spots on both sides of the river.

For dinner, make a reservation at The Salt House and request a table in the upstairs library lounge if possible. After dinner, continue the evening with a cocktail at the Whiskey Lounge inside Logan Inn or catch live music at Havana or John & Peter’s Place.

Day 2

Start the morning with breakfast at your hotel or a coffee and pastry downtown before heading out to explore more of Bucks County. Peddler’s Village is the most popular option and pairs well with a stop at Giggleberry Fair if you’re visiting with kids. If you’re more interested in history, Washington Crossing Historic Park is another excellent choice.

Return to New Hope in the afternoon and spend some time relaxing along the Delaware Canal or enjoying a drink at Doubles by Human Robot. The canal-side setting makes it one of the best places in town to slow down for an hour or two.

For your final meal, choose either Odette’s for riverfront dining or Stella for a more intimate dinner overlooking the Delaware River before heading home.
