West Bay is the easiest choice if you want a classic beach vacation, with resorts, restaurants, snorkeling, and one of Roatán’s best beaches all within easy reach. West End is better suited to travelers who want to be surrounded by dive shops, waterfront restaurants, bars, and a more walkable village atmosphere. Farther east, the island becomes quieter, more residential, and much less touristy.
I spent several weeks on Roatán, staying in Pristine Bay and exploring hotels, beaches, restaurants, and communities from West Bay toward the East End. After seeing how different each part of the island feels, I came away with clear preferences for where I’d stay depending on the type of trip.
For most first-time visitors, I’d start with West Bay or West End, but neither is the best fit for everyone. Below, I’ll break down the best areas to stay in Roatán, what each one does well, and the hotels and resorts I’d actually consider booking.

Roatán has several distinct areas to stay, and the best choice depends on the kind of trip you want. Some travelers want a beachfront resort where they can spend most of the week without renting a car, while others would rather be close to dive shops, restaurants, nightlife, or quieter residential areas.
These are the five areas I’d look at first when deciding where to stay in Roatán, with each offering a noticeably different experience.
West Bay
Best for: First-time visitors, beach vacations, luxury resorts, families, and honeymooners
West Bay is the easiest place to recommend for a first trip to Roatán if your priorities are the beach, snorkeling, and resort amenities. It has the island’s best-known stretch of sand, a large concentration of beachfront resorts, calm water, and excellent snorkeling just offshore. Restaurants, dive shops, and tour operators are also within easy walking distance, so you can stay here comfortably without renting a car.
West End
Best for: Divers, budget travelers, nightlife, restaurants, and younger travelers
West End is a better fit if diving, walkability, and nightlife matter more than having a large resort. Instead of sprawling beachfront properties, you’ll find smaller hotels, dive shops, waterfront bars, coffee shops, and some of my favorite restaurants on the island. It feels more like a compact Caribbean village and works especially well for travelers who want to spend their evenings out rather than staying on a resort property.
Pristine Bay
Best for: Golf, upscale stays, longer trips, remote work, and quieter vacations
Pristine Bay stands out for its golf course, villas, larger accommodations, and quieter residential setting. The community is built around the Black Pearl Golf Course, with Las Verandas, condos, villas, and private homes spread throughout the property. I think it works best for golfers, longer stays, families who want more space, and travelers who plan to rent a car and use the area as a base for exploring the island.
Sandy Bay
Best for: Diving, marine activities, quieter stays, and families
Sandy Bay is a strong choice if you want a quieter waterfront stay with easy access to diving and marine activities. It sits between Coxen Hole and West End and is home to Anthony’s Key Resort and the Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences. You give up some of the walkability of West End, but in return you get a calmer setting while still staying relatively close to restaurants, dive shops, and nightlife.
Central & East Roatán
Best for: Exploring the island, quieter resorts, local communities, and travelers with a rental car
Central and eastern Roatán make more sense for travelers who want to explore beyond the island’s main tourist areas. Around French Harbour, Los Fuertes, Jonesville, Oak Ridge, and farther toward the East End, you’ll find local restaurants, fishing communities, smaller resorts, and many of Roatán’s most interesting attractions.
I wouldn’t choose this part of the island for a first trip centered on a traditional beach resort. But if you plan to rent a car and want easier access to the eastern half of Roatán, it can be a much more practical base than West Bay or West End.
Where to Stay in West Bay: The Best Hotels & Resorts
For most first-time visitors, West Bay is where I’d start the hotel search. It combines Roatán’s best-known beach with some of the island’s top resorts, calm water for swimming, and excellent snorkeling just offshore. It’s also one of the easiest places to stay if you don’t plan to rent a car.
There are more hotels in West Bay, Roatán than anywhere else on the island, ranging from casual dive hotels to upscale beachfront resorts. Most are within walking distance of restaurants, beach bars, dive shops, and tour operators, while water taxis make it easy to head over to West End for dinner, drinks, or a change of scenery.
Why Stay in West Bay?
West Bay is the best fit if you want a traditional Caribbean beach vacation without giving up convenience. The beach has soft white sand, clear water, and some of the best snorkeling in Roatán just offshore, so you can spend much of the day swimming or snorkeling without booking a tour.
You also won’t need to leave the area very often. Restaurants, dive shops, beach bars, small stores, and tour operators are all close by, and water taxis connect West Bay with West End in just a few minutes.
For families, couples, honeymooners, and first-time visitors who want an easy beach-focused trip, West Bay is still my top area to stay in Roatán.
Best Hotels in West Bay, Roatán
West Bay has no shortage of hotels and resorts, but I don’t think you need a long list to find the right one. These are the four I’d narrow it down to depending on whether you want a luxury beachfront resort, a smaller boutique hotel, a family-friendly property with more space, or a casual dive resort with a social atmosphere.
LUXURY BEACH RESORT
Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort & Spa
If you want a polished beachfront resort with some of the nicest amenities in West Bay, Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort & Spa would be my first choice. It sits at the southern end of West Bay Beach and, in my opinion, is the best luxury hotel in Roatán for travelers who want a full resort experience without giving up direct access to the beach.
One of the things I like most about the Kimpton is the layout. Rather than putting everything into one large hotel building, the rooms and bungalows are tucked into tropical landscaping, with paths winding through the property toward the pool and ocean. The large beachfront pool is one of the resort’s focal points, while some of the best snorkeling in West Bay is directly offshore. This end of the beach also works especially well for families, since kids can often see schools of tropical fish around the rocks without swimming very far out.
The restaurants give you another reason to stay on the property. Alera is one of my favorite upscale restaurants in Roatán, serving a large breakfast buffet in the morning and a more refined dinner menu at night. For something casual, The Drop Off sits directly on the beach and is an easy option for lunch, drinks, or sunset.
Kao Kamasa Spa adds another layer to the resort and was one of the most impressive spas I saw on the island. Accommodations range from traditional rooms and suites to standalone bungalows and larger villa-style options, giving couples and families several ways to stay depending on how much space they want.
Best for: Luxury travelers, couples, honeymooners, families, and anyone looking for a full-service beachfront resort in West Bay.

BOUTIQUE BEACH HOTEL
Arca Boutique Hotel
If you want a smaller, more intimate alternative to the large resorts in West Bay, Arca Boutique Hotel is one of my favorite options. This 16-room boutique hotel sits directly on West Bay Beach, with lush landscaping, a small saltwater pool, and rooms tucked throughout the property rather than grouped into one large building.
Arca feels especially inviting at night, when the lighting throughout the trees and gardens gives the property a warm, almost hidden-away atmosphere. The pool is much smaller than what you’ll find at resorts like Infinity Bay, but it fits the scale of the hotel and gives guests a quiet place to relax just steps from the beach.
Ahari, the hotel’s beachfront restaurant and bar, is another big reason I’d stay here. Tables extend onto the sand for open-air dining right by the water, and everything we tried was excellent. My filet was cooked perfectly medium rare, the burger was one of the better casual meals we had in West Bay, and the zucchini noodles were a surprisingly good choice.
Alera at the Kimpton is the more polished fine-dining option, but Ahari may have been my favorite restaurant in West Bay when considering the food, setting, and price together. I feel much the same way about Arca itself. You give up some of the amenities of a large luxury resort, but in return you get a quieter beachfront hotel with more personality and, in my opinion, one of the best combinations of quality and value in West Bay.
Best for: Couples, romantic trips, boutique-hotel travelers, and anyone looking for an upscale beachfront stay without choosing a large resort.

FAMILY BEACH RESORT
Infinity Bay Spa & Beach Resort
If you’re traveling with kids and want large pools, spacious rooms, and an easy beachfront location, Infinity Bay Spa & Beach Resort is one of my top family choices in West Bay. It isn’t the most modern resort on the beach, but it offers several things that matter more on a family trip: room to spread out, two large pools, included breakfast, and direct access to West Bay Beach.
The pool setup is the biggest draw for families. Infinity Bay has two large swimming pools, giving kids much more room than at many of the smaller resorts nearby. The pool closest to the beach has a small swim-up section by the bar, while the second pool includes a broad shallow area that worked especially well for younger kids during our stay.
The rooms are spacious and practical, although ours felt somewhat dated compared with newer properties like the Kimpton. Many of the studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas include kitchens or kitchenettes with refrigerators, microwaves, and cooking facilities, which can be especially useful for families or anyone staying more than a few nights.
Breakfast is included, with a large buffet each morning before you head to the beach or pool. The resort also sits directly on West Bay Beach, with snorkeling and diving available just offshore.
I wouldn’t choose Infinity Bay for a high-end luxury trip, but that isn’t really where it stands out. For families who want big pools, larger accommodations, breakfast included, and a prime beachfront location without paying Kimpton prices, it’s one of the easiest resorts in West Bay for me to recommend.
Best for: Families, longer stays, groups needing larger rooms, and travelers who prioritize pools and space over luxury.

Bananarama Dive & Beach Resort
If you want to combine frequent diving with a social beachfront stay, Bananarama Dive & Beach Resort is one of the easiest options to recommend in West Bay. It has a much more casual feel than the Kimpton or Arca, with the beach, dive center, restaurants, bars, and weekly entertainment all centered around the same property.
The Thirsty Turtle Beach Bar & Restaurant is at the heart of the resort, with tables and bar seating right along West Bay Beach. Pizzarama adds brick-oven pizza, and there’s also a small coffee shop, so you have several convenient food and drink options without leaving the property.
For scuba divers, the biggest advantage is the on-site PADI dive center. Boats depart directly from West Bay Beach, making it easy to go from your room to the dock without arranging transportation. The resort also offers snorkeling trips and other excursions, so it works well for travelers who want to spend a lot of time on the water.
Bananarama is lively even if you aren’t diving. Thirsty Turtle hosts live music, karaoke, and other events throughout the week, while Sunday evenings bring the popular crab races and fire show. We went during our stay in Roatán, and it ended up being one of the more fun nights we had in West Bay.
I wouldn’t choose Bananarama for a quiet romantic trip or a polished luxury resort experience. But if you want a casual beachfront hotel where you can dive often, meet other travelers, and have food, drinks, and entertainment right outside your room, it’s one of the most convenient places to stay in West Bay.
Best for: Divers, social travelers, younger couples, and anyone looking for a casual beachfront stay with plenty going on.

Things to Know Before Booking
West Bay is one of the more expensive areas to stay in Roatán. Hotels, restaurants, and beach activities generally cost more here than in other parts of the island, but you’re paying for the convenience of being directly on the beach with most of what you need close by.
One of the biggest advantages is that you usually don’t need a rental car. Most visitors can walk between their hotel, restaurants, dive shops, and the beach, then use taxis or water taxis when they want to explore somewhere else.
The area can get noticeably busier during peak season and when cruise ship excursions arrive, especially around the middle of the day. If you prefer a quieter stretch of beach, early morning and late afternoon are usually better times to be out.
West Bay is also one of the easiest places on the island for snorkeling and diving. Several dive shops operate directly from West Bay Beach, and the reef begins just offshore, so you can snorkel without booking a boat trip.
Should You Stay in West Bay?
For most first-time visitors, West Bay is where I’d stay in Roatán. It offers the strongest combination of beach access, resorts, restaurants, snorkeling, and convenience, and it’s one of the easiest areas to enjoy without renting a car.
Choose West Bay if you want to spend most of your trip on the beach, stay at a full-service resort, or keep the logistics of your vacation simple.
If diving, nightlife, and a more walkable village atmosphere matter more, I’d choose West End instead. For a quieter stay or a longer trip, Sandy Bay and Pristine Bay are also worth considering.
Where to Stay in West End: Best Hotels for Diving & Nightlife
If you want to stay somewhere built around diving, restaurants, nightlife, and walkability rather than a large resort, West End is one of the best places to stay in Roatán. The waterfront neighborhood is packed with smaller hotels, dive shops, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and locally owned businesses, all within a relatively compact area.
Compared with West Bay, West End feels much more like a walkable town than a resort district. It’s especially well suited to scuba divers, budget-conscious travelers, younger visitors, and anyone who wants to be able to walk out of their hotel and have plenty to do nearby.
Why Stay in West End?
West End is one of the easiest parts of Roatán to enjoy without a rental car. Hotels, dive shops, coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and the waterfront are all within walking distance, so you can spend most of your trip exploring on foot.
Diving is another major reason to stay here. Many of Roatán’s established dive operators are based in West End, and several hotels make it easy to stay, eat, and dive within the same small neighborhood. For a dive-focused trip that still gives you plenty to do after you’re out of the water, West End is one of the strongest choices on the island.
There are a few places to swim, including Half Moon Bay, but I wouldn’t choose West End primarily for the beach. If a long stretch of white sand is your priority, West Bay is the better fit and is only a short water taxi ride away.
Best Hotels in West End, Roatán
The hotels in West End, Roatán tend to be smaller and more affordable than the large resorts in West Bay. Rather than listing every guesthouse and dive hotel, these are the three I’d look at first depending on whether you want a waterfront boutique hotel, an affordable private room, or a stay built almost entirely around scuba diving.
BOUTIQUE WATERFRONT HOTEL
The Beach House
If you want a boutique hotel with some of the best water views in West End, The Beach House would be my first choice. It sits directly on Half Moon Bay, and all 14 suites face the water, giving the property a much more intimate feel than the larger resorts in West Bay.
The views are the main reason I’d stay here. Some rooms sit almost directly over the beach, with balconies or patios overlooking Half Moon Bay, and these were easily my favorite hotel views anywhere in West End. You’re also just steps from restaurants, bars, dive shops, and water taxis, so you keep the walkability that makes West End so appealing. The hotel partners with Sun Divers next door for diving and other water activities.
Mila del Mar, the hotel’s beachfront restaurant, is another major plus. It sits above the sand with open views across Half Moon Bay and is a great spot for sunset drinks or dinner. We ate here during our stay and liked both the food and setting enough that I also included it in my guide to the best restaurants in Roatán. There’s also a dock bar if you just want a drink by the water.
The Beach House doesn’t have the large pools or extensive resort amenities you’ll find in West Bay, so I wouldn’t choose it if that’s your priority. But if you want a stylish waterfront hotel, excellent views, and a central West End location where you can walk almost everywhere, it’s one of the best options in the area.
Best for: Couples, romantic trips, boutique-hotel travelers, and anyone who prioritizes water views and a central West End location.

Mr. Tucan Hotel
For an affordable private room in the middle of West End without dropping down to a hostel, Mr. Tucan Hotel is one of the better-value options I found. It sits above Bean Crazy, and while the entrance is easy to overlook from the street, the property feels much more substantial once you head upstairs.
The rooms are simple rather than luxurious, but they’re clean and comfortable, with shared open-air spaces on the upper levels. We walked through the property while visiting Bean Crazy, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much nicer it felt once we got inside. The hotel is also expanding with another building behind the existing property, which should add more rooms.
The central location is probably its biggest advantage. Half Moon Bay, dive shops, restaurants, bars, and water taxis are all within an easy walk, and Bean Crazy is directly downstairs for coffee, baked goods, breakfast, and other meals. Breakfast is also included with hotel stays.
I wouldn’t choose Mr. Tucan for a resort experience, a pool, or a romantic getaway. But if you’d rather keep hotel costs down and spend more of your budget on diving, restaurants, and activities, it’s a very practical place to stay in West End.
Best for: Budget-conscious couples, solo travelers, younger travelers, and anyone looking for an affordable private hotel room in central West End.

Splash Inn Dive Resort
If diving is the main reason for your trip, Splash Inn Dive Resort is one of the strongest choices in West End. The hotel, restaurant, and dive center are all grouped together along the main strip just steps from the water, making it easy to build most of your stay around scuba diving without giving up West End’s walkability.
Splash Inn operates as a PADI 5-Star Dive Resort and offers guided boat dives, night dives, snorkeling trips, and multi-day dive packages. Once you’re back on land, you’re still right in the middle of West End, with restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and other businesses all within walking distance.
The hotel itself is more practical than luxurious, which fits the type of trip most people would book here. If you expect to spend much of the day underwater or out exploring, you may not care about having a large resort with extensive amenities. Guests do have access to a large swimming pool, although it’s less than a 10-minute walk from the main hotel rather than directly beside the rooms.
What makes Splash Inn especially appealing is how simple it makes a dive-focused vacation. You can stay, eat, and dive with the same operation while still having the restaurants and nightlife of West End right outside your door. For serious divers, solo travelers, or anyone coming to Roatán for certification, it’s one of the more convenient dive resorts on the island.
Best for: Scuba divers, solo travelers, couples planning a dive-focused trip, and anyone who wants to stay in the heart of West End.

Where to Stay in Pristine Bay: Best for Golf, Luxury Villas & Remote Work
Pristine Bay is a very different place to stay than West Bay or West End. Instead of a busy beach or walkable nightlife, you get a quieter gated community built around the Black Pearl Golf Course, with villas, condos, a marina, and Las Verandas overlooking the Caribbean.
I stayed in Pristine Bay while working remotely, and I think it makes the most sense for travelers who want more space, a quieter setting, or a longer stay. It’s especially appealing if golf is part of the trip or if you plan to rent a car and use the area as a base for exploring more of the island.
Why Stay in Pristine Bay?
Golf, space, and a more residential atmosphere are the main reasons to stay in Pristine Bay. Homes, villas, and condos are spread throughout the community, so it feels much less like a traditional resort area than West Bay or West End.
The Black Pearl Golf Course is the centerpiece, and French Harbour, grocery stores, and several of the island’s larger supermarkets are only a short drive away. That makes Pristine Bay especially practical for longer stays, particularly if you want a kitchen, extra living space, or more residential-style accommodations.
For golfers, remote workers, families who want more room, or travelers looking for a quieter base, Pristine Bay offers a very different experience from the busier west side of Roatán.
Best Hotel in Pristine Bay
There aren’t many traditional hotels within Pristine Bay, so the choice is fairly simple. Las Verandas Hotel & Villas is the main resort option, with spacious hotel rooms as well as larger private villas that work particularly well for families, groups, and longer stays.
UPSCALE & GOLF RESORT
Las Verandas Hotel & Villas
If you want to stay close to the Black Pearl Golf Course or prefer more space than you’ll find at most beach resorts, Las Verandas Hotel & Villas is the main option in Pristine Bay. During our stay, I saw both the standard hotel rooms and several of the private villas, and the better choice really comes down to how long you’re staying and how much space you want.
The hotel rooms are much larger than a typical hotel room. Ours had a separate living area, plenty of room to spread out, and a balcony overlooking the property. For couples or anyone staying just a few nights, I think the standard rooms offer more than enough space.
For families, groups, or longer stays, I’d seriously consider one of the villas. They come with much more living space, full kitchens, better views, and private plunge pools, so they feel more like vacation homes than traditional hotel rooms. After visiting friends who were staying in one, I could easily see the appeal, especially for a week-long stay or anyone planning to spend more time around Pristine Bay.
Best for: Golfers, couples, families, remote workers, and travelers looking for more space and a quieter resort setting.

Things to Know Before Booking
Unlike West Bay or West End, I strongly recommend having a rental car if you stay in Pristine Bay. Las Verandas is easy enough to get around once you’re there, but most restaurants, grocery stores, beaches, and attractions require a drive.
The tradeoff is that you get more space, fewer crowds, and a much more residential setting than you’ll find in the main tourist areas on the west side.
Pristine Bay is also home to Prospera, although you don’t need to know much about it to stay at Las Verandas or enjoy the area. I’ll be covering Prospera separately for anyone interested in learning more about the development.
Should You Stay in Pristine Bay?
Pristine Bay would not be my first choice if your priority is staying on Roatán’s best-known beach or being able to walk to restaurants and nightlife every night.

Sandy Bay is a good fit if you want a quieter waterfront stay without moving too far from West End. It sits between Coxen Hole and West End, close to several established dive operations and marine attractions, but feels much more relaxed than the island’s busiest tourist areas.
You won’t get the long white-sand beach or concentration of restaurants found in West Bay, but Sandy Bay makes sense for travelers who want scuba diving, snorkeling, marine life, and a calmer setting to be a bigger part of the trip.
Why Stay in Sandy Bay?
Diving and marine activities are the main reasons I’d choose Sandy Bay. Hotels and resorts are spread along the coast rather than clustered around one busy beach, giving the area a more residential feel while still keeping you relatively close to West End.
Sandy Bay is also home to the Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences at Anthony’s Key Resort, which adds another reason to stay here if dolphins, snorkeling, or other marine experiences are high on your list. For divers, the area offers access to established dive operations without the nightlife and crowds of West End.
The tradeoff is walkability. You won’t step outside your hotel and have dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops around you, so taxis or a rental car are much more useful here.
Best Hotel in Sandy Bay
Anthony’s Key Resort is the standout choice in Sandy Bay, especially if you want your stay to revolve around diving, snorkeling, and marine activities. Rather than adding extra hotels just to make the list longer, I think it makes more sense to recommend the resort that gives travelers the clearest reason to choose Sandy Bay in the first place.

Anthony's Key Resort
If you want a resort where diving and marine activities are the focus of the trip, Anthony’s Key Resort is one of the strongest choices in Roatán. The property sits in a quieter waterfront setting in Sandy Bay, with accommodations split between the hillside and Anthony’s Key just offshore.
The waterfront bungalows are what make the resort stand out most. Some sit right along the edge of the key with decks overlooking the water, giving the property a very different feel from the larger beachfront hotels in West Bay. Anthony’s Key feels more like a destination dive resort than a hotel you simply use as a place to sleep. I wouldn’t choose it if West Bay Beach or West End nightlife were my priorities, but for a dive-focused trip, it’s one of the most distinctive resorts on the island.

Things to Know Before Booking
Sandy Bay is quieter than West Bay and West End, but it’s also much less walkable. Depending on where you stay, you’ll probably rely on taxis or a rental car for dinner, shopping, and exploring other parts of the island.
The beaches here are also very different from West Bay Beach. I’d choose Sandy Bay for diving, snorkeling, marine activities, and a quieter waterfront setting rather than for a traditional white-sand beach vacation.
One advantage is that West End is still close by, so it’s easy to head over for dinner or nightlife and then return to a much calmer area afterward.
Should You Stay in Sandy Bay?
Choose Sandy Bay if you want a quieter stay and expect diving, snorkeling, or marine life to be a big part of your trip. Anthony’s Key Resort is especially appealing if you want a property where diving and many other marine activities can be arranged directly through the resort.
For a first trip to Roatán, I’d still choose West Bay if your priority is the beach and having restaurants within walking distance. If nightlife, dive shops, and being able to walk almost everywhere matter more, West End is the better fit.
Other Great Places to Stay in Roatán
West Bay and West End are still the easiest choices for most first-time visitors, but they aren’t the only good places to stay in Roatán. Some of my favorite hotels sit outside those areas and make more sense for travelers who want more privacy, a quieter setting, or a better base for exploring the island.
I’d consider these properties if you’re planning to rent a car, don’t need to be within walking distance of West Bay or West End, or simply want a different kind of stay.
Staying elsewhere can make sense when the hotel itself fits the kind of trip you’re planning. Ibagari Boutique Hotel is one of my favorite choices for couples who want privacy, a romantic setting, and easy access to both West Bay and West End without staying in the middle of either. Pineapple Villas works well as a more central base if you plan to explore French Harbour and the eastern half of the island, while Barefoot Cay Resort is a better fit for travelers looking for a smaller, quieter property with a strong focus on diving.
The biggest consideration is transportation. Once you stay outside West Bay and West End, I strongly prefer having a rental car. Roatán is a long island, and having your own vehicle makes it much easier to reach restaurants, beaches, grocery stores, and attractions without planning every trip around a taxi.
ROMANTIC BOUTIQUE HOTEL
Ibagari Boutique Hotel
If you want a romantic boutique hotel with more privacy than West Bay or West End, Ibagari Boutique Hotel is one of my favorite options on Roatán. It sits along the coast between the two main tourist areas, but the setting feels surprisingly removed from both.
Part of that sense of seclusion comes from the location itself. The final road down to the hotel has sharp turns and steep downhill sections, and once you reach the property, the atmosphere feels completely different from the busier areas nearby. Ibagari is small and quiet, so you don’t get the crowds or constant activity you’ll find along West Bay Beach.
The property was also one of the most distinctive we visited on the island. Art is displayed throughout the buildings and common areas, and parts of the hotel feel more like a gallery than a traditional Caribbean resort. The pools and terraces overlook the water, while the west-facing location makes sunset one of the best times to be there.
Luna Muna, Ibagari’s on-site restaurant, is another major reason I’d stay here. It was one of my favorite upscale restaurants in Roatán, and the combination of the food, waterfront setting, art, and quiet atmosphere makes Ibagari especially well suited to honeymoons, anniversaries, and romantic trips.
I wouldn’t choose Ibagari if you want to walk out of your hotel and immediately have restaurants, bars, and shops around you. But if privacy, sunset views, and a more intimate setting matter more, it’s one of my favorite upscale stays on the island while still keeping West Bay and West End within easy reach.

CENTRAL BASE FOR EXPLORING
Pineapple Villas
If you plan to spend a good part of your trip exploring central and eastern Roatán, Pineapple Villas can be a practical base. The resort is in French Harbour rather than directly on the beach, so I wouldn’t choose it over West Bay for a traditional beach vacation. Its biggest advantage is location, especially if you’re renting a car and want easier access to more of the island.
The property has multiple pools and spacious suite-style accommodations, while Herby’s Sports Bar & Grill is one of its standout features. In my opinion, it was the best true sports bar we found on Roatán, with plenty of TVs, drinks, and casual food if you want to catch a game without leaving the resort.
Pineapple Villas also has a different kind of beach setup. The resort itself isn’t beachfront, but guests can access Big French Key, with transportation available between the property and the island. It takes a little more effort than simply walking out onto West Bay Beach, but Big French Key offers clear water and a much quieter beach setting.
The location is especially useful if you want to visit the monkey and sloth sanctuaries, Big and Little French Key, French Harbour, Jonesville and Oak Ridge for mangrove tours, or continue farther toward Roatán’s East End.
For most first-time visitors looking for the easiest beach vacation, I’d still choose West Bay. But if you want a more central base for exploring and don’t mind driving, Pineapple Villas can be a much more practical option.
Best for: Travelers exploring central and eastern Roatán, families, longer stays, sports fans, and visitors planning to rent a car.

Barefoot Cay Resort
If you want a smaller dive resort with a secluded island feel, Barefoot Cay Resort is one of the most distinctive places to stay in Roatán. Much of the property sits on a private cay just offshore, reached by a short boat ride from the mainland side of the resort, so it feels removed without putting you too far from French Harbour and the middle of the island.
Scuba diving is a major part of the experience, with an on-site dive operation and easy access to the reef. Accommodations range from rooms on the mainland side to oceanfront villas and bungalows around the cay, giving Barefoot Cay a much more intimate feel than the larger resorts in West Bay.
Azure, the waterfront restaurant, is another reason I’d stay here. The atmosphere is casual, but the food was some of the best we had on the island. The menu mixes Caribbean flavors, seafood, and more creative dishes, and the open-air setting overlooking the water makes it worth visiting even if you aren’t staying at the resort. I wouldn’t choose Barefoot Cay if you want to walk to lots of restaurants or spend every day on West Bay Beach. I’d stay here for the private-cay setting, diving, excellent restaurant, and the chance to be somewhere quieter than the island’s main tourist areas.

Where should you stay in Roatán without a car?
West Bay and West End are the easiest places to stay in Roatán without renting a car.
Choose West Bay if you want a beach vacation. Resorts, restaurants, beach bars, snorkeling, dive shops, and tour operators are all concentrated along the beach, and water taxis make it easy to get to West End.
Choose West End if restaurants, nightlife, and diving matter more. It’s even more walkable, with most hotels, dive shops, bars, and restaurants packed into a relatively small area.
I would not recommend Pristine Bay without a car unless you’re comfortable relying on taxis or spending most of your time at the resort.
Is West Bay or West End better?
Choose West Bay if your ideal Roatán trip is mostly about the beach, snorkeling, resort pools, and having everything you need within a short walk.
Choose West End if you care more about diving, restaurants, nightlife, walkability, and keeping hotel costs lower. It feels more like a small Caribbean town than a resort area.
For most first-time visitors, especially families, I prefer West Bay. For divers, younger travelers, solo travelers, or anyone on a tighter budget, I’d choose West End.
Do you need a rental car in Roatán?
Not necessarily. If you stay in West Bay or West End, you can easily spend your entire trip without one. Both areas are walkable, and taxis or water taxis are usually enough when you want to go somewhere else.
If you stay in Pristine Bay, French Harbour, or farther east, I strongly recommend renting a car. Restaurants, beaches, grocery stores, and attractions are more spread out, and having your own vehicle makes exploring the island much easier.
Is Roatán safe?
The main tourist areas of Roatán, including West Bay, West End, Pristine Bay, and Sandy Bay, generally felt comfortable during our stay. I’d still use normal travel precautions, especially at night: keep an eye on your belongings, avoid displaying large amounts of cash, and use reliable transportation when moving around the island.
We drove extensively around Roatán during the day and explored communities well beyond the main resort areas without any significant issues. I’d be more cautious after dark, particularly in unfamiliar areas away from the main tourist zones.
Is Roatán or Utila better for diving?
Both islands are excellent for diving, but they suit different types of trips. Roatán is the better choice if you want to combine diving with beaches, resorts, restaurants, and a wider range of things to do outside the water.
Utila tends to appeal more to backpackers and travelers whose trip revolves almost entirely around diving, especially if keeping costs down is a priority.
