Ybor City, Tampa

The Best Restaurants in Ybor City, Tampa

The best restaurants in Ybor City reflect the neighborhood’s long history and diverse cultural influences. Located just northeast of downtown Tampa, Ybor City is one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods and remains one of Tampa’s best places for nightlife. Once the center of Tampa’s cigar industry, the area was shaped by Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants whose influence can still be seen today in the neighborhood’s restaurants and food traditions.

While Ybor City hasn’t traditionally been known for having the strongest culinary scene in Tampa, there are still several restaurants worth visiting. Some are historic institutions like the Columbia Restaurant, which has been serving Spanish and Cuban food here for more than a century. Others are Italian restaurants that reflect the waves of immigration that helped shape the neighborhood. And of course, several spots serve a great Cuban sandwich, one of Tampa’s most famous local dishes.

In recent years, a few newer additions have also helped elevate the area’s dining scene. Rather than ranking the restaurants below strictly by food quality, I highlight places that capture the essence of Ybor City and its unique history.

Columbia Restaurant

SPANISH–CUBAN CLASSIC

No restaurant is more closely tied to Ybor City than the Columbia Restaurant. Open since 1905, it’s the oldest restaurant in Florida and one of the most iconic restaurants in Tampa. What began as a small café serving Cuban coffee and sandwiches has grown into the largest Spanish restaurant in the world, now occupying an entire city block in the heart of Tampa’s historic Ybor City district.

The menu reflects the neighborhood’s immigrant roots, blending Spanish and Cuban dishes like paella, ropa vieja, and the restaurant’s famous Cuban sandwich. The 1905 Salad, tossed tableside with ham, Swiss cheese, olives, and a garlic dressing, is another must-order and one of the restaurant’s signature dishes. Flamenco dancers also perform several nights a week, adding to the lively atmosphere and the restaurant’s long tradition of entertainment.

If you’re only going to visit one restaurant in Ybor City, this should probably be it. The Columbia is one of the most iconic restaurants in Tampa and one of the best places to experience traditional Spanish and Cuban cooking in the historic district where the Cuban sandwich first became popular. It also appears on my guide to the most iconic restaurants in Tampa, which highlights several historic dining institutions across the city.

Mise en Place

FINE DINING

Earlier I mentioned that Ybor City isn’t exactly known as Tampa’s top culinary destination. But if any restaurant challenges that idea, it’s Mise en Place.

This longtime Tampa fine-dining institution recently moved into Ybor City after decades in South Tampa and quickly became one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood. The restaurant is also recognized in the Michelin Guide, further cementing its reputation as one of the city’s premier dining destinations.

The menu features refined contemporary American cuisine with French influences, seasonal ingredients, and an excellent wine list. While historic spots like the Columbia Restaurant are must-visits for the cultural experience, nothing in Ybor quite matches the level of culinary execution you’ll find at Mise en Place.

REFINED SICILIAN DINING

Casa Santo Stefano is one of the newer restaurants in Ybor City, but it fits naturally into the neighborhood’s history. Opened by the same family behind the Columbia Restaurant, it focuses on traditional Sicilian cuisine as a tribute to the Italian immigrants who once worked in Ybor’s cigar factories alongside Cuban and Spanish workers.

Located inside a beautifully restored historic building, Casa Santo Stefano offers a calmer and more refined dining experience than many of the restaurants along Ybor’s main strip. The menu highlights classic Sicilian dishes like pasta alla Norma, arancini, and fresh seafood, along with a strong Italian-focused wine list.

The restaurant also features a rooftop bar called Santos Drinkeria, which opens on Friday and Saturday nights and offers a more relaxed place to enjoy drinks above the busy streets of Ybor City. I included it in my guide to the best rooftop bars in Tampa, where it stands out for its views over the historic brick streets of the neighborhood and its creative cocktail menu.

While Ybor City today is better known for nightlife than fine dining, Casa Santo Stefano is one of the neighborhood’s true destination restaurants alongside the Columbia. If you’re looking for a quieter dinner in Ybor City without the bar-heavy atmosphere found in much of the district, this is one of the best places to go.

La Terrazza

La Terrazza

TRADITIONAL ITALIAN

La Terrazza is one of several Italian restaurants in Ybor City, reflecting the strong Italian influence that helped shape the neighborhood during Tampa’s cigar boom. Italian immigrants were a major part of Ybor’s early community, and restaurants like this help carry that tradition forward.

The restaurant itself is relatively small, giving it a more intimate feel than some of the larger spots in the neighborhood. The menu focuses on classic Italian dishes like pasta, seafood, and veal, along with a solid Italian wine list.

While not as historic as the Columbia Restaurant, La Terrazza has been part of Ybor City’s dining scene for many years and appears on my list of the best Italian restaurants in Tampa.

Bernini

ITALIAN + MARTINI HAPPY HOUR

Bernini is one of the most popular restaurants in Ybor City and a place where the neighborhood’s dining and nightlife scenes naturally overlap. The restaurant sits inside a beautifully restored historic bank building, and the interior still reflects that history with high ceilings, dramatic lighting, and a lively atmosphere that often carries well into the evening.

The menu focuses on Italian favorites like pasta, seafood, and steaks. But Bernini is perhaps best known for its martini happy hour, which has become something of a local tradition in Tampa. The discounted martinis draw a big crowd, especially in the early evening, and many people start their night here with dinner or drinks before heading out to explore the rest of Ybor City.

While it may not be the most refined Italian restaurant in Tampa, Bernini remains one of the most enjoyable places in Ybor City for a meal thanks to its historic setting, energetic atmosphere, and long-running popularity.

Gaspar’s Grotto

BRUNCH & OUTDOOR PATIO

Gaspar’s Grotto is one of the most recognizable spots in Ybor City and has long been part of the neighborhood’s nightlife scene. Located in a historic building along 7th Avenue, the restaurant and bar spans multiple levels and includes a large outdoor patio that’s especially popular during weekend brunch and busy evenings.

The menu focuses on casual bar fare like burgers, sandwiches, and seafood baskets. While the food is fairly standard, the real draw is the atmosphere. Gaspar’s is a popular brunch spot in Ybor City, particularly for its outdoor patio where guests can enjoy drinks and a relaxed meal while watching the crowds pass by on Ybor’s main strip.

Compared with some of the louder clubs and bars nearby, Gaspar’s tends to have a slightly more laid-back feel during the day. There is often live music in the afternoons as well as at night, making it a fun place to stop for drinks or brunch before the neighborhood’s nightlife picks up later in the evening.

Because of its location and long presence in the neighborhood, Gaspar’s often feels like part of the Ybor City experience itself. Even if the food isn’t the main reason to visit, it remains one of the most recognizable places along 7th Avenue to grab a drink, enjoy the patio, or start a night out in Ybor City.

Flan Factory

CASUAL CUBAN RESTAURANT

Flan Factory is a small Cuban restaurant just north of the main Ybor City strip that has developed a loyal following for its home-style cooking. While it’s only a short walk from the busiest part of the neighborhood, the restaurant has become popular enough in recent years to expand into the space next door to create a larger dining room.

The menu features Cuban classics like ropa vieja, croquetas, and pressed sandwiches, along with desserts like flan and tres leches cake. The Cuban sandwich here, called El Tampeño, is one of the more interesting versions in Tampa. It includes both mustard and mayonnaise, which may spark debate among purists, but it’s an excellent sandwich and one of the reasons Flan Factory has become a favorite with locals. It’s also one of the sandwiches featured in my guide to the best Cuban sandwiches in Tampa.

Flan Factory doesn’t serve alcohol, but it’s still a great place to stop for Cuban comfort food, strong Cuban coffee, or dessert before heading back toward Ybor City’s bars and nightlife.

Carmine’s Restaurant & Bar

CLASSIC ITALIAN-AMERICAN

Carmine’s Restaurant & Bar has been part of Ybor City’s dining scene for decades and is known for its hearty Italian-American dishes and lively atmosphere. The menu leans toward generous portions of pasta, seafood, and classic comfort food, making it a popular place to grab a substantial meal before a night out.

Located right along Ybor’s main strip on 7th Avenue, Carmine’s often draws a steady crowd before concerts, events, and late nights in the district. While it may not be the most refined Italian restaurant in Tampa, it remains a dependable choice if you’re looking for a big meal and a lively setting in the heart of Ybor City.

Bread on the Bay

Bread on the bay

Bread on the Bay is a newer addition to the Ybor City food scene, located just east of the main strip along 7th Avenue. Opened in 2022, this small sandwich shop quickly gained attention for its carefully crafted sandwiches and house-baked bread.

The menu includes a range of creative options, but the Cuban sandwich is one of the highlights and has already earned a place among the better versions in Tampa. While the shop doesn’t have the history of some of Ybor’s older restaurants, the quality of the ingredients and attention to detail make it stand out.

If you’re exploring Ybor City and looking for a great lunch spot, Bread on the Bay is one of the best places in the area for sandwiches and a well-executed Cuban.

Acropolis Greek Taverna

LIVELY GREEK DINING

Acropolis Greek Taverna brings a lively Mediterranean atmosphere to Ybor City with a menu built around familiar Greek dishes like souvlaki, lamb chops, grilled seafood, and large mezze platters meant for sharing. The restaurant is part of a small Tampa-based group with a few locations, but the Ybor City spot fits naturally into the neighborhood’s energetic dining scene.

Located along Ybor’s main strip on 7th Avenue, Acropolis tends to draw groups looking for a fun dinner before heading out into the neighborhood’s nightlife. The restaurant is known for its upbeat atmosphere, which often includes music and occasional entertainment that adds to the experience.

While Ybor City is historically known for its Cuban and Italian influences, Acropolis offers a different style of cuisine and remains one of the more lively places to grab dinner along the strip.

The Bricks

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

CASUAL BRUNCH & COFFEE

The Bricks is one of the more relaxed spots in Ybor City and works well whether you’re looking for brunch, coffee, or a casual meal. During the day it has a laid-back café feel, while evenings tend to bring a slightly livelier crowd.

The menu includes sandwiches, burgers, and comfort food favorites, along with a full bar and a good selection of coffee drinks. It’s a convenient stop if you’re exploring the neighborhood during the day or looking for a low-key place to grab a bite before Ybor’s nightlife picks up later in the evening.

Compared with some of the larger restaurants in Ybor City, The Bricks has a more casual, local feel that helps round out the neighborhood’s mix of dining options.

Ybor City may be better known for its nightlife than its food scene, but there are still several restaurants worth visiting while exploring the neighborhood.
