The Best Hotels in Tampa: Where to Stay

Finding the best hotel in Tampa isn’t as straightforward as it sounds, and where you stay in Tampa genuinely changes your experience. The city doesn’t have one obvious neighborhood to base yourself in, which makes choosing harder than in most places. A hotel in downtown Water Street puts you steps from Amalie Arena and the Riverwalk but feels removed from the best restaurant neighborhoods. SoHo and Hyde Park give you walkable dining and nightlife but require a drive to catch a Lightning game. Ybor City is the right call if nightlife is the priority, and the Rocky Point area near the airport makes sense if you’re in town for business or want easy access to the Gulf beaches.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Tampa and have stayed in several of these hotels myself. This guide covers the best places to stay in Tampa by neighborhood and travel style, from luxury downtown hotels on Water Street to boutique options in Hyde Park and waterfront hotels near the airport, so you can find the right fit for your trip.

The Best Areas to Stay in Tampa

Tampa has several distinct neighborhoods worth considering, and the right one depends entirely on what you’re planning to do. These are the areas with the most hotels and the strongest case for each.

Downtown Tampa (Best for First-Time Visitors and Hockey Games)

Downtown is where most first-time visitors end up, and for good reason. The Water Street district and Channelside area have seen significant development over the past several years and now include some of Tampa’s newest and best hotels. Amalie Arena is located here, making downtown the obvious choice if you’re coming for a Tampa Bay Lightning game or a major concert, and there are some great restaurants near Amalie Arena worth knowing about before you go. The Riverwalk connects parks, museums, and waterfront restaurants, and the free TECO streetcar runs from downtown directly to Ybor City if you want to explore the nightlife without driving.

Hyde Park / South Tampa (Best for Restaurants and Walkable Neighborhoods)

Hyde Park and the broader South Tampa area offer a quieter, more residential feel while still being a short drive from downtown. The neighborhood is known for Bayshore Boulevard, one of the longest continuous sidewalks in the country with waterfront views, shopping and dining at Hyde Park Village, and the lively restaurant and bar scene along South Howard Avenue, known locally as SoHo. If you want to stay somewhere that feels like a real Tampa neighborhood rather than a tourist district, this is it. The Epicurean Hotel is the standout accommodation option here.

Ybor City (Best for Nightlife)

Ybor City is Tampa’s historic district and the center of its nightlife scene. Founded in the late 1800s as the hub of Tampa’s cigar industry, the neighborhood still reflects the cultural influence of Cuban, Spanish, Italian, and Eastern European immigrants who shaped it. The bars, restaurants, and music venues along 7th Avenue make it the best area in Tampa for nightlife, and the neighborhood’s history makes it worth a visit even if you’re not staying here. Check out my guide to the best restaurants in Ybor City if you’re planning a night out.

Westshore & Tampa Airport (Best for Business Travelers)

The Westshore district near Tampa International Airport is the most practical choice for business travelers and short stays. Most hotels here are geared toward convenience over character, but the nearby Rocky Point area is the exception. Several upscale waterfront hotels sit along Tampa Bay here with sunset views that rival anything downtown, and the location gives you quick access to both the airport and the Gulf Coast beaches in Clearwater.

Best Hotels in Downtown Tampa

WATER STREET / DOWNTOWN

The Tampa EDITION

The Tampa EDITION is the only hotel in the city with a Michelin-starred restaurant on property, which tells you everything about the level of ambition here. The dining program is led by Chef John Fraser and spans three concepts: Market on the first floor for Italian coastal food and Neapolitan pizza, Azure on the ninth floor for Mediterranean and Greek cuisine, and Lilac, the flagship tasting menu restaurant that holds a Michelin star. Even if you’re not staying here, Lilac alone is worth planning a trip around.

The hotel itself matches that energy. The ninth-floor rooftop pool is one of the most photographed spots in Tampa, with private cabanas, a pool bar, and resident DJs on weekends that push the atmosphere closer to a nightlife venue than a typical hotel pool. Azure is also on my list of best rooftop bars in Tampa. It’s lively, which is a pro if that’s your scene and a con if you’re looking for a quiet retreat. Between the dining, the pool scene, and the design of the property itself, the Tampa EDITION is the most complete luxury experience in the city.

WATER STREET / DOWNTOWN

JW Marriott

The JW Marriott Tampa Water Street sits in the heart of the Water Street district, directly behind Amalie Arena. If you’re coming to Tampa for a Lightning game or a major concert, this is the most convenient hotel in the city. The location also puts you steps from Sparkman Wharf and some of Tampa’s best waterfront restaurants, and the free TECO streetcar stops nearby if you want to head to Ybor City for the night.

The property delivers what you’d expect from the JW brand — rooftop pools, a full-service spa, and a well-equipped gym. The real highlight is the Beacon Rooftop Lounge on the 27th floor, where you can get craft cocktails and small bites while looking out over the Tampa skyline. It’s one of the highest rooftop bars open to the public in the city. The main downside is price — this is one of the most expensive hotels in Tampa, so if the rate is out of range, the Tampa EDITION a block away is the next best option.

ROOST Tampa

ROOST is a boutique apartment-style hotel in downtown Tampa that works particularly well for longer stays, remote workers, and groups. Rooms come with full kitchens, and the property also offers co-living suites with four or eight bedrooms and shared cowork space, which makes it one of the more practical and affordable options in the Water Street area. If you’re staying for a week or splitting costs with a group, ROOST is worth a serious look.

DOWNTOWN TAMPA

Le Méridien Tampa

Le Méridien Tampa is housed in a restored Federal courthouse dating back to 1905, and the building itself is genuinely beautiful in a way that none of the newer Water Street hotels can match. It’s a Marriott property with solid amenities and an easy walk to everything downtown, though it sits slightly removed from the Water Street and Channelside action. If architectural character matters more to you than being steps from the arena, this is a good option at a typically lower price point than the JW or EDITION.

Hampton Inn

The Hampton Inn in Channelside is one of the better value options for a downtown Tampa hotel, and it’s a nicer property than a typical Hampton Inn. The Channelside location puts you close to dining, bars, and the waterfront, and it’s an easy walk to Amalie Arena. The main trade-off is no on-site bar or restaurant, so you’re relying on what’s around you. For a straightforward, clean, well-located hotel at a reasonable price, it gets the job done.

Best Hotel in Hyde Park

SOHO / HYDE PARK

Epicurean Hotel

The Epicurean is owned by the same family behind Bern’s Steak House, which sits directly across the street, and that connection shapes everything about the hotel. Food is central to the concept here in a way it isn’t at most properties. The on-site restaurant Elevage serves breakfast through dinner, the EDGE rooftop cocktail lounge is one of the better spots for a drink in SoHo, and the hotel occasionally hosts hands-on cooking classes at the Epicurean Theatre. EDGE is also on my list of best rooftop bars in Tampa.

I lived two blocks away for nearly five months, and if I were moving back to Tampa long term, SoHo is the neighborhood I’d choose again. The combination of walkability, restaurants, and nightlife makes it one of the most enjoyable parts of the city. The one trade-off is that you’ll need a car or rideshare to reach downtown or Amalie Arena, but for travelers who want a great neighborhood base rather than a tourist-district hotel, the Epicurean is the best option in Tampa.

Best Hotel For Nightlife of Ybor City

YBOR CITY

Hotel Haya

Hotel Haya sits directly on 7th Avenue, the main strip of bars, restaurants, and live music venues in Ybor City. The neighborhood has a genuinely interesting history rooted in the cigar industry of the late 1800s, when Cuban, Spanish, Italian, and Eastern European immigrants settled here and shaped the culture that’s still visible today. The Cuban sandwich traces its roots to this community, and the architecture, social clubs, and food scene still reflect that heritage. If you want to be in the middle of Tampa’s best nightlife, this is the neighborhood and this is the hotel.

The property itself is a stylish boutique hotel that blends modern design with Ybor’s historic character. There’s a good coffee shop, a full-service restaurant, a courtyard pool, and a fitness center. The one honest con is noise: being on 7th Avenue means the weekend bar scene is right outside your window, so light sleepers should keep that in mind. If Hotel Haya is outside your budget, the Hampton Inn and Hilton Garden Inn are both nearby and more affordable, though neither has the character of this place.

Best Hotels Near the Tampa Airport

ROCKY POINT / NEAR AIRPORT

Grand Hyatt

The Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay sits within a 35-acre nature preserve along the shores of Tampa Bay, which gives it a feel unlike any other hotel in the city. It’s not unusual to have herons and other coastal birds wandering past while you have your morning coffee. The property has two outdoor pools, tennis courts, a fitness center, a small man-made beach, and kayak rentals. Because the resort is spread across a large waterfront preserve, some amenities require a short walk from the main tower, and the restaurant is about ten minutes on foot from most guest rooms.

That restaurant is Oystercatchers, and it’s the main reason locals come here even when they’re not staying at the hotel. It’s an award-winning seafood spot with west-facing views over Tampa Bay that make it one of the better places in the area for a sunset dinner or Sunday brunch — and it made my list of best waterfront restaurants in Tampa. The location near the Courtney Campbell Causeway also puts you closer to Clearwater and the Gulf beaches than most Tampa hotels, and the Rocky Point Golf Course is just a short drive away. If you’re not tied to downtown, this is one of the most relaxing places to stay in Tampa.

The CURRENT Hotel

The Current Hotel is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection and sits along Old Tampa Bay in the Rocky Point area, a short drive from Tampa International Airport. The rooftop bar Casa Cami is the standout feature, offering some of the best sunset views in the city and earning a spot on my list of best rooftop bars in Tampa. The signature restaurant Julian handles breakfast, lunch, and dinner for guests who want to stay on property, and the heated pool sits one level above the small man-made beach, giving it a relaxed waterfront feel without actually being on the rooftop.

A sunset view of the CURRENT Hotel in Tampa

The Rocky Point location works well if you’re flying in or out of Tampa International, but it’s not the right base if downtown is where you plan to spend most of your time. That said, the Rusty Pelican is a short walk for upscale waterfront dining and Whiskey Joe’s is right there for a more casual beach bar vibe. Clearwater Beach is also an easy drive from here. One thing to know before you book: parking is valet only.

Best Casino Hotel

NORTHEAST TAMPA

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is about 15 minutes northeast of downtown Tampa and operates more like a self-contained resort than a typical hotel. The casino is one of the largest in the United States, with thousands of slot machines and table games, and the property draws as many locals on a night out as it does hotel guests. The hotel itself is a AAA Four Diamond property with modern, upscale rooms connected directly to the casino floor. There are three outdoor pools with private cabanas, multiple bars and lounges, and a live music venue that regularly hosts concerts.

Dining is a genuine highlight here. Council Oak Steaks & Seafood is widely regarded as one of the best steakhouses in Tampa, known for its dry-aged cuts and upscale atmosphere. The main trade-off is location. If your plan is to explore Tampa’s neighborhoods, visit Ybor City, or catch a game at Amalie Arena, you’ll be driving or ridesharing each time. But if you’re looking for a place where you can eat, gamble, catch a show, and spend the whole weekend without ever needing to leave the property, the Hard Rock delivers that better than anywhere else in Tampa.

Best Budget Hostel

TAMPA HEIGHTS

Gram's Place Bed & Hostel

Gram’s Place is currently the only hostel in Tampa, and it’s tucked away on a quiet residential street in Tampa Heights that gives it a more local, relaxed feel than anything you’d find near downtown. The hostel is clean, comfortable, and well maintained, with reliable Wi-Fi and a spacious outdoor area where guests tend to gather and socialize. Accommodation options range from private rooms to smaller dorms and larger shared community rooms, so it works for solo travelers and small groups alike.

An outdoor socializing area at Gram's Place, a budget hostel in Tampa

The location is the main trade-off. You’ll want a car, scooter, or bike to get around and explore the rest of Tampa, since there isn’t much within walking distance. But for longer stays where keeping costs down is the priority, Gram’s Place is genuinely hard to beat. I stayed here once myself and had a great experience. The price difference compared to even a budget hotel in downtown Tampa is significant enough that it’s worth the extra planning around transportation.
