The Best Places to Eat in Rhinebeck, NY

Rhinebeck, New York is one of the most charming villages in the Hudson Valley and one of our favorite places for a weekend getaway. This guide covers the best restaurants in Rhinebeck NY, from casual cafes and bakeries to sit-down dinner spots, along with a few personal favorites.

We tend to visit in two different modes. In the colder months, we come for a quiet holiday weekend and stay at the Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn, one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in the United States, with a fireplace that’s perfect for a drink after dinner. During the summer and fall, when the village is at its busiest and the Dutchess County Fair draws big crowds each August, we’ll sometimes stop by for a day trip or a quick overnight stay.

Even though it’s a relatively small village, the food scene here is surprisingly strong. You’ll find everything from organic bakeries and bagel shops to French bistros, Indian cuisine, wood-fired pizza, and farm-to-table restaurants. Compared with some other Hudson Valley towns, Rhinebeck can feel a little more upscale, and the prices reflect that, but the quality and atmosphere make it worth the visit.

Most of the best places to eat are concentrated in the walkable downtown area along East Market Street and Montgomery Street, making it easy to browse the shops before stopping for lunch, drinks, or dinner. Whether you’re planning a day trip from New York City or a full weekend in the Hudson Valley, this guide covers where to eat in Rhinebeck across every meal and every budget.

My Top Picks for Restaurants in Rhinebeck, NY

Rhinebeck has more dining variety than most people expect from a small Hudson Valley village. These are my top picks across four different experiences, whether you’re starting your morning with freshly baked bread, grabbing an artisan pizza for lunch, sitting down for a flavorful Indian dinner, or soaking up the atmosphere of one of the oldest inns in America.

BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT

Cinnamon Indian Cuisine

The best Indian food in the Hudson Valley and one of the most reliable restaurants in Rhinebeck NY. Rich, well-spiced classics like chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo, with excellent vegetarian options and garlic naan that’s worth the visit alone.

BEST HISTORIC DINING

Tavern at the Beekman Arms

Dinner or drinks inside one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in the United States. The Beekman Arms Inn in Rhinebeck NY is worth visiting for the atmosphere alone, with wood-paneled rooms, a working fireplace, and the kind of historic charm that’s impossible to replicate.

BEST PIZZA

Pizzeria Posto

The best pizza in Rhinebeck NY and a step above what you’d expect from a small Hudson Valley village. Artisan pies made to order with high-quality ingredients and creative topping combinations in a sit-down setting that feels a little more refined than your average pizza restaurant.

BEST BREAKFAST & BAKERY

Bread Alone

One of the most beloved bakeries in the Hudson Valley and a must-visit stop in Rhinebeck New York. Organic wood-fired breads, rustic sourdough, flaky pastries, and excellent coffee in a warm cafe setting that’s equally good for a quick grab-and-go or a relaxed morning.

Cinnamon Indian Cuisine

Cinnamon Indian Cuisine is one of my personal favorite restaurants in Rhinebeck and the best option in the village if you’re craving flavorful Indian food in the Hudson Valley. Located right on East Market Street in the heart of the village, this cozy spot serves a wide range of classic Indian dishes prepared with rich spices and fresh ingredients.

The menu includes favorites like chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, and creamy butter chicken, along with a variety of vegetarian options such as chana masala and saag paneer. Each dish is served with fragrant basmati rice, and the warm naan, especially the garlic naan, is perfect for soaking up the sauces.

It’s also a more complete sit-down experience than many casual Indian spots. They serve cocktails, wine, and Indian beers like Kingfisher and Taj Mahal, which makes it an easy place to settle in for a full dinner rather than just takeout.

The dining room has a comfortable, welcoming feel, and the food is consistently well prepared without trying to do too much. If you enjoy Indian food, this is a spot that reliably delivers and is worth working into your plans.

Le Petit Bistro

Moules Frites at Le Petit Bistro

Le Petit Bistro is one of my favorite restaurants in Rhinebeck and an easy pick if you’re in the mood for classic French bistro fare. This charming spot on East Market Street has a cozy, intimate atmosphere that works well for a relaxed dinner.

The menu features traditional dishes like steak frites and duck confit, along with other rich, comforting bistro classics prepared with simple, well-executed flavors. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in for a leisurely meal and enjoy a bottle or glass of wine.

One of my favorite ways to visit is to sit at the bar. It’s a great place for a glass of wine, and they often have fresh oysters available, which makes for a nice start to the evening. Between the setting, the wine list, and the consistently good food, it’s a spot worth making time for.

Tavern at the Beekman Arms

Tavern at Beekman Arms

The Tavern at the Beekman Arms is one of the most historic and atmospheric places to eat or grab a drink in Rhinebeck. Located inside the Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn on Mill Street, it is part of what is widely considered the oldest continuously operating hotel in the United States, dating back to the 18th century. Walking into the tavern feels like stepping back in time, with wood-paneled rooms, low ceilings, and cozy fireplaces throughout.

The menu leans toward classic American tavern fare, making it a comfortable and reliable choice for lunch or dinner while exploring the village. Even if you are not planning a full meal, it is worth stopping in for a drink. There is a small bar inside where you can order beer, wine, or cocktails and then settle into one of the surrounding rooms.

I stayed here over New Year’s Eve this past year with my wife and daughter, and we ended up meeting family in the tavern for drinks. It is exactly the kind of place that works for that kind of night, relaxed, historic, and easy to settle into for a while.

What really stands out here is the atmosphere. Grab a drink and sit by the fireplace or move into one of the adjoining rooms. It is the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and stay a while, especially in the colder months. Whether you are stopping in for a meal or just a drink, it is one of those Rhinebeck experiences that is hard to replicate anywhere else.

Pizzeria Posto

Pizzeria Posto

Pizzeria Posto serves the best pizza in Rhinebeck, NY, but it’s not your typical slice shop. Instead of classic takeout-style pizza, this restaurant focuses on elevated, artisan pies made with high-quality ingredients and creative topping combinations.

Each pizza is made to order and baked for about five to seven minutes, producing a crisp, flavorful crust with perfectly melted toppings. The menu leans toward more refined, designer-style pies rather than traditional New York slices, with thoughtfully paired ingredients that make each one feel a step above what you’d expect from a pizza restaurant in a small Hudson Valley village.

Because of the premium ingredients and sit-down atmosphere, the pizzas here are a bit more expensive than what you’d find at a typical pizza parlor in Rhinebeck. But the quality more than justifies it. If you’re looking for outstanding pizza in Rhinebeck New York, or just want something a little more considered than a standard slice, Pizzeria Posto is worth making time for.

Foster's Coach House Tavern

Fosters Coach House

Foster’s Coach House Tavern is a longtime Rhinebeck favorite that offers a more casual dining experience, with a character and atmosphere that sets it apart from other spots in town. It’s the kind of place that feels welcoming and lived-in, making it an easy stop for lunch or a relaxed dinner after exploring the village.

One of the first things you’ll notice is the distinctive neon sign out front, which has become something of a landmark on Montgomery Street. Inside, the restaurant has a cozy tavern feel, and during the holiday season it’s often decorated with festive Christmas decor that adds to the charm.

The menu focuses on hearty American tavern food, and the London broil sandwich is worth ordering if you’re stopping in for lunch. While it isn’t as upscale as some of Rhinebeck’s other restaurants, the relaxed atmosphere, classic dishes, and personality make it a place locals and visitors return to. For a casual meal with real Rhinebeck character, this is a strong pick.

Terrapin Restaurant

Terrapin is one of Rhinebeck’s most established restaurants and one of the more distinctive dining spaces in the entire Hudson Valley. The building was originally the First Baptist Church of Rhinebeck, built in 1825, and the formal dining room still sits beneath the original cathedral ceilings with soaring windows overlooking the village. It’s a genuinely impressive room.

The restaurant operates as two distinct spaces. The formal dining room is open for dinner, with a menu of contemporary American cuisine that leans on local and organic ingredients — larger entrees, reservations recommended, dressy casual. It’s the kind of place you’d book for a special occasion.

The Red Bistro & Bar is a different experience entirely and the side I tend to visit. More casual, more neighborhood in feel, and open earlier in the day — the menu runs through appetizers, tapas, sandwiches, quesadillas, and lighter plates, along with a full cocktail and beer list. It gets busy on weekend days, so arrive early or be prepared to wait for a seat at the bar. The build-your-own burger has a strong following and the duck quesadilla comes up repeatedly as a standout.

If you’re visiting Rhinebeck for the first time, the Red Bistro side is an easy stop for a drink and a few plates. If you want the full church dining room experience, book the formal side in advance.

Little Goat

Little Goat is one of Rhinebeck’s newest additions, opening in the former space of the Amsterdam, which was a longtime favorite on Mill Street before closing. It’s on my list to visit and I’ll update this section with a full review once I’ve been. In the meantime, it’s worth knowing about if you’re exploring downtown Rhinebeck — the space has always been a good one, and early word around town is positive.

Best Breakfast, Brunch & Coffee in Rhinebeck

Bread Alone

Bread Alone

Bread Alone is one of the most well-known bakeries in the Hudson Valley and a must-visit stop when you’re in Rhinebeck, NY. This longtime local favorite specializes in organic, wood-fired breads along with pastries, breakfast items, sandwiches, and excellent coffee, and has become one of the defining food stops in town.

Bread Alone is known for its rustic sourdough loaves, hearty whole-grain breads, and flaky pastries. If you stop in the morning, you’ll find a tempting display of croissants, muffins, scones, and other baked goods that pair perfectly with a cup of coffee. The cafe also serves a variety of breakfast sandwiches and light lunch options, making it an easy choice for breakfast before a day of exploring the village.

Inside, the cafe has a warm and inviting atmosphere with plenty of seating, while the outdoor patio is especially nice during the warmer months. Whether you’re grabbing a quick pastry and coffee or sitting down for a relaxed breakfast, it remains one of the best spots in the Hudson Valley for freshly baked organic bread and casual cafe fare.

Matchbox Cafe

Egg Sandwich at Matchbox Cafe

Matchbox Cafe is a small cafe just outside Rhinebeck Village and a good spot for a simple breakfast or lunch in Rhinebeck NY. Because of its location on Route 9, I especially like it as a stop on the way out of town, although if you have a car it’s easy to reach anytime during your visit.

The breakfast menu at Matchbox Cafe Rhinebeck is small and straightforward. The main options are egg sandwiches on a sesame seed bun and the cafe’s challah French toast, which is their signature dish. I recommend both if you’re looking for a quick, simple breakfast in Rhinebeck. It’s also worth noting that Matchbox doesn’t open until 11am, so it works better as a late breakfast stop rather than a place for an early morning bite.

Later in the day the menu shifts more toward lunch with sandwiches and other casual options. They also sell soups and chicken pot pies to take home and heat up later, which is a nice option if you’re staying nearby and want something easy for dinner.

The cafe itself is very small inside, so it can fill up quickly during busy weekends and peak tourist season in Rhinebeck New York. The owners previously ran a bakery in New York City for about 25 years before opening Matchbox Rhinebeck, and they had spent many years visiting the village before eventually deciding to open their own spot here. If you happen to chat with the owners while you’re there, you’ll quickly see how friendly they are and might end up staying a bit longer than expected.

Rhinebeck Bagels

For a quick breakfast or an easy grab-and-go bite, Rhinebeck Bagels is one of the most convenient stops in the village. This casual shop is a local favorite for freshly baked bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and hot coffee, and an easy place to start the day before exploring town.

The bagels have that classic New York-style chew, and you can order them toasted with a variety of cream cheeses or piled high with eggs, bacon, sausage, or Taylor ham for a satisfying breakfast sandwich. It’s the kind of place where locals stop in before work and visitors grab something quick before walking around downtown.

Most people take their food to go, but there is some outdoor seating during the warmer months, which makes it a nice spot to sit with a bagel and coffee on a sunny morning. If you’re arriving early or just want something quick and affordable, this is one of the easiest and most reliable options in Rhinebeck.
