This family-owned spot is known for generous portions and affordable prices. The menu covers all the breakfast classics, from pancakes and omelets to French toast, plus burgers and sandwiches for lunch. The breakfast specials are worth paying attention to, with creative pancake and French toast variations that change things up.
The interior is cozy and unpretentious. Regulars get greeted by name, and if it’s your first time, you’ll feel at home quickly.

Armsby Abbey
Armsby Abbey is a restaurant and craft beer bar on Main Street in downtown Worcester. It won Worcester Magazine’s award for best new restaurant in 2009 and has kept winning or getting nominated ever since. The category that best describes the place, though, is the streak of being named Worcester’s best Sunday brunch, best cocktails, and best beer selection.
The wooden tables, long bar, and exposed brick walls give it a gastropub feel. The kitchen focuses on organic and sustainable produce, much of it sourced from local farms. The craft beer list is what Armsby Abbey is probably best known for, with over 20 taps and a bottle list that covers local, national, and international brews.
It’s a solid spot for lunch or dinner any day of the week, but Sunday brunch in Worcester doesn’t get much better than this. The brunch menu is small and rotates every couple of weeks, which keeps it worth coming back to.

Deadhorse Hill
Deadhorse Hill is one of the best restaurants in Worcester, MA and one of my personal favorites.
Chef Jared Foreman came up at some of New York City’s most respected kitchens, including Gramercy Tavern, Momofuku, and the three Michelin-starred Per Se. When he and his wife decided to move north to her home state, it was a straight win for Worcester.
The menu is seasonal American, built around local sourcing and quality ingredients. You’ll regularly find house-made pastas, locally sourced meats, and seafood prepared with a creative touch. The menu changes with the seasons, so there’s always a reason to go back.

Livia's Dish
Livia’s Dish sits somewhere between a casual diner and the weekend brunch spots like Armsby Abbey and Deadhorse Hill. It’s a step up from a typical diner without being precious about it.
Owner Enton Mehillaj developed an interest in cooking young, making Italian and Mediterranean dishes with his family in Albania. He moved to the US at 18, attended Johnson and Wales University, and worked at several hotels before he and his wife opened their own place. They named it after their daughter.
The menu covers breakfast and lunch, and breakfast is served all day. You’ll find omelets, pancakes, crepes, and several French toast options alongside sandwiches, salads, and heartier lunch plates.

Altea's Eatery
If you like Livia’s Dish, you’ll probably like Altea’s Eatery too. It’s owned by the same husband and wife team and named after their second daughter.
The menu leans a bit more French than Livia’s, with crepes, beignets, and a croque madame alongside the standard American breakfast fare. They also do French-Canadian poutine, which is worth trying. And if you’re there on a weekend, get a Bloody Mary made with one of their house-infused vodkas.

Sisters Restaurant
Sisters Restaurant is a family-run diner on Stafford Street that has been serving breakfast and lunch in Worcester for many years. It has a reputation for friendly service and generous portions, and it earns it.
The menu is straightforward American diner fare. Breakfast covers egg dishes, pancakes, and waffles, and lunch brings in sandwiches, burgers, and comfort food staples like meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
The interior is small and unpretentious. The owners are usually around, the staff treats you like a regular, and it has the kind of atmosphere that’s hard to manufacture.

Miss Worcester Diner
The Miss Worcester Diner is a Worcester landmark and a genuine piece of American diner history. It’s housed in a classic Worcester Lunch Car Company diner car, sitting right across the street from the original factory that produced this style of diner from 1906 to 1957. The snug booths, formica countertops, and vintage decor make it one of the more atmospheric breakfast places in Worcester, MA.
It has been serving traditional American breakfast and lunch since 1948. The menu covers the classics: pancakes, omelets, and daily specials. It opens early and closes at 2pm.

Boulevard Diner
The Boulevard Diner is another Worcester institution built by the Worcester Lunch Car Company. It opened in 1936 on Shrewsbury Street and, like the Miss Worcester Diner, retains much of its original charm.
The menu has all-day breakfast along with typical diner fare. But what sets Boulevard apart is that it’s open 24 hours on weekends, which made it the default late-night stop after the bars closed when I was at WPI. If you’re out late in Worcester and need food, this is where you go.

Kenmore Diner
The Kenmore Diner is one of the longest-running breakfast spots in Worcester, MA. It originally opened in 1965, closed briefly, and was reopened by James and Pauline Yantsides in 1974. It was a rail-style diner with a stainless-steel exterior and the kind of mid-century charm that Worcester diners do well.
In 1999, a fire erupted in an adjacent cold storage warehouse and burned catastrophically. Six firefighters lost their lives. One of them, Jay Lyons, was a cousin of comedian Denis Leary, which led Leary to establish the Leary Firefighters Foundation to help fire departments with equipment, training, and technology.
The original diner was demolished and rebuilt from scratch, with oversized booths, red vinyl seats, and a black-and-white checkered floor that keeps the nostalgic feel intact.
In 2008, a memorial was unveiled to honor the six firefighters who lost their lives, known as the Worcester Six: Paul Brotherton, Timothy Jackson, Jeremiah Lucey, James Lyons, Joseph McGuirk, and Thomas Spencer.

Cafe Reyes serves Cuban and Latin American breakfast and lunch on Shrewsbury Street. It doubles as a vocational training program for residents of the Hector Reyes House, a recovery program for Latino men. The breakfast cubano and Cuban coffee are the things to order.
BirchTree Bread Company on Green Street is a bakery and cafe that has grown into one of the better all-around breakfast restaurants in Worcester, MA. Everything is made in-house, including the bread, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches. They also do Sunday brunch and hearth-baked pizza on select evenings.
Root & Press recently moved to Shrewsbury Street and is an independent bookstore and cafe with a full breakfast and lunch menu. Good spot if you want vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free options.
Salt & Pepper is a well-regarded breakfast and lunch spot on Lincoln Street with a loyal local following. The omelets and Eggs Benedict get consistently strong reviews, and the portions are generous for the price.
Acoustic Java roasts their own beans on-site at their Brussels Street location and is a strong case for best coffee shop in Worcester. The food menu is light, but the coffee is the point.
