The Best Hotels on Isla Mujeres, Mexico

The Best Hotels on Isla Mujeres: Where to Stay

Janice and I spent months living in Mexico, and Isla Mujeres was one of the places we kept returning to. We’ve stayed in different parts of the island, but we strongly preferred El Centro, where we could walk to Playa Norte, restaurants, and bars without needing a golf cart or taxi every time we wanted to go somewhere.

The best hotels on Isla Mujeres range from small beachfront properties near Playa Norte to luxury all-inclusive resorts on the quieter south end. Where you stay makes a difference, especially if you’re visiting for the first time. I generally recommend the north end, but there are good reasons to stay farther south, depending on the kind of trip you’re planning.

In this guide, I’ll cover the best areas to stay on Isla Mujeres and my hotel recommendations for different budgets, including beachfront hotels, all-inclusive resorts, boutique properties, and hostels.

If you’re still planning your trip, my Isla Mujeres travel guide covers transportation, restaurants, beaches, and things to do around the island.

Top Picks: Best Hotels on Isla Mujeres

These are my top hotel picks on Isla Mujeres, depending on whether you’re looking for a beachfront hotel near El Centro, a luxury all-inclusive resort, or something more affordable. I’ve included more details on each property below.

BEST OVERALL

My top recommendation for most visitors to Isla Mujeres. This adults-only (14+) hotel has two pools, a gym, spa, and beach club near Playa Norte. The all-inclusive package is optional, so you can enjoy the hotel’s amenities while still exploring the restaurants and bars in El Centro.

BEST LUXURY GETAWAY

An adults-only, all-inclusive luxury resort on the south end of Isla Mujeres, with oceanfront suites, infinity pools, seven dining options, and butler service. A good choice for couples looking for a relaxing resort vacation rather than spending every evening exploring downtown.

BEST ROMANTIC GETAWAY

A small boutique hotel with just 11 rooms, an oceanfront pool, spa, and rooftop bar overlooking the Caribbean. Tucked away on the quiet northern tip of Isla Mujeres, but only a few minutes’ walk from the restaurants and bars of El Centro. A great choice for couples who want privacy without staying at an isolated resort.

BEST HOSTEL

A budget-friendly hostel near El Centro, with shared dorms, private rooms, and unique teepee-style accommodations. It also advertises a coworking space, PADI dive center, yoga facilities, and social activities, making it a popular option for backpackers and digital nomads.

Best Areas to Stay on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is only about five miles long, but where you stay makes a big difference. The north end is walkable and has most of the restaurants, bars, and nightlife, while the southern parts of the island are quieter and have more resorts. I strongly recommend staying near El Centro for your first visit, but each area has its advantages.

North Island (El Centro & Playa Norte)

For first-time visitors, I think the north end of Isla Mujeres is easily the best place to stay. El Centro is the island’s downtown area, just a short walk from Playa Norte, with its white sand and calm turquoise water. The main pedestrian street, Avenida Hidalgo, is lined with restaurants, bars, and shops, many of which stay busy well into the evening.

Hotels range from beachfront properties directly on Playa Norte to small boutique hotels and vacation rentals scattered around downtown. Everything is within walking distance, so you won’t need a golf cart or taxi unless you want to explore the rest of the island. It’s busier than other parts of Isla Mujeres, but having so much nearby is a big part of why I prefer staying here.

South Island & Sac Bajo

The southern parts of Isla Mujeres are quieter, with luxury resorts, beachfront hotels, and vacation rentals. Sac Bajo, along the western coast, has several resorts and beach clubs with smaller beaches and calmer water. Farther south toward Punta Sur, the coastline becomes rockier, with ocean views and a more secluded atmosphere.

This area is a good choice if you want to relax at your hotel rather than spend every evening exploring downtown. The tradeoff is location. You’ll generally need a taxi or golf cart to reach Playa Norte and the restaurants and bars in El Centro.

For a first visit, I’d still recommend the north end. But if you’re planning a quiet getaway or prefer an all-inclusive resort, staying farther south may be a better fit.

Mid-Island (Colonias)

The middle of Isla Mujeres is primarily residential, with local restaurants, small shops, and more apartment rentals than traditional hotels. Accommodations are generally less expensive than those around Playa Norte, making this area worth considering if you’re traveling on a budget or planning a longer stay.

You won’t have the same beach access or concentration of restaurants and bars as El Centro, so you’ll probably need a golf cart, taxi, or bus to get around. I wouldn’t choose this area for a short first visit, but it can be a good option if you want a more residential setting and don’t mind being farther from the main tourist areas.

Privilege Aluxes

Privilege Aluxes is my top hotel pick on Isla Mujeres for most visitors. This adults-only (ages 14+) hotel is located between Playa Centro and Playa Norte, just a short walk from the restaurants and bars in El Centro. The hotel has two swimming pools, a pool bar, a gym, and a spa, along with a beach club on Playa Norte with lounge chairs and Balinese beds. The larger suites are particularly nice, with options that include private Jacuzzis or rooftop pools.

Aerial view of Privilege Aluxes hotel and its swimming pools near Playa Norte in Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

Breakfast is included with every room and served buffet-style at Sabor, the hotel’s main restaurant. There’s also Satay, an Asian restaurant serving sushi and Thai dishes, and the beachfront restaurant at Playa Norte Beach Club. Privilege Aluxes offers an optional all-inclusive package covering meals, drinks, and room service, but you don’t have to book it. That’s a big advantage on Isla Mujeres, where there are so many good restaurants within walking distance. I’d personally skip the all-inclusive and spend my evenings eating around El Centro.

Ixchel Beach

Ixchel Beach Hotel has one of the best locations on Isla Mujeres, sitting directly on Playa Norte and just a short walk from the restaurants and bars in El Centro. The hotel has two towers, each with a beachfront pool, and around 100 rooms ranging from standard doubles to spacious one- and two-bedroom suites with kitchens and balconies. The oceanfront suites are especially appealing for their views of the Caribbean and sunsets. Beach chairs and umbrellas are included for hotel guests.

The onsite Kalak Restaurant & Bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner overlooking Playa Norte, along with drinks and snacks by the pool. There’s also a fitness center and room service. Ixchel isn’t quite as upscale as Privilege Aluxes, but if you want to stay directly on the sand and spend most of your time at the beach, I think it’s one of the best choices on the island.

NORTH BEACH / EL CENTRO

Nautibeach

Nautibeach is a collection of privately owned condos directly on Playa Norte, making it one of the better options on Isla Mujeres for families or groups who want more space than a standard hotel room. Accommodations range from smaller studios and single rooms to spacious two-bedroom condos and a penthouse with a wraparound terrace overlooking the Caribbean. Most units have full kitchens and balconies or patios, although the smaller rooms have fewer amenities. Since the condos are individually owned, the furnishings and updates can vary quite a bit between units. The property also has a beachfront pool surrounded by tropical gardens, with lounge chairs and umbrellas for guests.

Nautibeach is one of the best places to stay on Isla Mujeres. It is located on Playa Norte.

The onsite Mayan Beach Club serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner right on Playa Norte, making it a convenient spot for food, drinks, or a sunset dinner. Nautibeach is also within walking distance of the restaurants and bars in El Centro, so you don’t need a golf cart to go out in the evening. One thing to pay attention to when booking is the specific unit you’re getting, since the layouts, views, and furnishings vary. Some condos are available through the main Nautibeach rental program, while others are rented directly by their owners through vacation rental platforms.

NORTH ISLAND / EL CENTRO

Hotel Secreto

Hotel Secreto is a small boutique hotel with just 11 rooms, tucked away on the quiet northern tip of Isla Mujeres. It feels secluded, yet the restaurants and bars of El Centro are only a few minutes away on foot. The hotel has a beautiful oceanfront pool, a spa, and spacious rooms, many with large balconies overlooking the Caribbean. It’s a good choice if you want somewhere quiet without being far from downtown.

Hotel Secreto is one of the best boutique hotels on Isla Mujeres.

The rooftop bar, The Roof, serves cocktails and small plates with panoramic views of the island, making it a nice spot for sunset drinks. There’s no full-service restaurant for breakfast, but you can arrange lunch delivery or walk into El Centro for meals. The small beach in front of the hotel isn’t safe for swimming because of the rocky shoreline and strong currents, but Playa Norte is just a short walk away.

BOUTIQUE | OCEANFRONT | ROOFTOP BAR | POOL

NORTH ISLAND / EL CENTRO

Hotel Playa La Media Luna

Hotel Playa La Media Luna sits next to Hotel Secreto on a quiet stretch of coastline at the northern tip of Isla Mujeres. It’s a small, laid-back hotel with an oceanfront pool, tropical gardens, and rooms overlooking either the Caribbean or the gardens. Some rooms have balconies with hammocks, while larger suites offer private Jacuzzis. It’s generally more affordable than many of the other beachfront hotels near Playa Norte, making it a good option if you want somewhere quiet without spending a fortune.

The beach in front of the hotel is better for relaxing than swimming, but Playa Norte is only a short walk away. There’s no full-service restaurant, although breakfast is available, and the restaurants and bars of El Centro are just a few blocks away. I think Media Luna is one of the better values on the north end of Isla Mujeres, especially if you prefer a smaller hotel away from the busy streets downtown.

NORTH ISLAND / EL CENTRO

Nílu Isla Mujeres by Selina

Nílu Isla Mujeres by Selina is one of the best budget options on the island, particularly for backpackers, solo travelers, and digital nomads. Accommodations range from shared dorms and private rooms to family rooms, suites, and unique teepee-style rooms. The property sits along the waterfront near El Centro, just a few blocks from Playa Norte. There’s also a coworking space with Wi-Fi and areas for working remotely, along with a restaurant, pool, and regular social events that make it easy to meet other travelers.

A bunk bed guestroom at Nílu Isla Mujeres by Selina, a beachfront hostel on Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

The onsite PADI dive center is a big advantage if you’re interested in scuba diving or getting certified during your stay. There’s also a waterfront yoga area, and the hostel has traditionally hosted Saturday night parties that attract guests and other visitors. The beach directly in front of the property isn’t suitable for swimming, but Playa Norte is only a short walk away. If you’re looking for a quiet or luxurious hotel, this probably isn’t the right fit, but for affordable accommodation with a social atmosphere near downtown, Nílu is worth considering.

NORTH BEACH / EL CENTRO

Mía Reef Isla Mujeres

Mía Reef is an all-inclusive resort on a small private island connected to the north end of Isla Mujeres by a short bridge. It’s one of the more debated hotels on the island, with visitors tending to either love the location or complain about the accommodations and food. But if you’re traveling with young children, I think it’s one of the best hotels on Isla Mujeres. The shallow, sheltered lagoon is great for swimming and snorkeling with kids, and the resort has a kids club, daytime activities, and evening entertainment. Having meals and drinks included also makes things easier for families.

Mia Reef is an all inclusive resort in Isla Mujeres. It is the best hotel for families on the island.

For adults traveling without children, I’d be less enthusiastic. The rooms are showing their age, and the food gets mixed reviews, particularly compared with the many good restaurants just a short walk away in El Centro. The resort has several dining options, including a buffet, Mexican restaurant, and seafood restaurant, but you’re paying for all-inclusive whether you eat there or not. If you’re planning to spend your evenings trying restaurants and bars around the island, I’d skip Mía Reef. For families who want a beautiful setting, shallow water, and the convenience of an all-inclusive resort, it’s a much stronger option.

SAC BAJO / SOUTH ISLAND

Impression Isla Mujeres

Impression Isla Mujeres, formerly Impression by Secrets, is an adults-only, all-inclusive luxury resort on the southern end of Isla Mujeres. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean, the resort has 123 suites, several infinity pools, and a small private beach. All suites include butler service, 24-hour room service, and a minibar restocked twice daily. There are seven dining options and five bars serving premium spirits, so there’s plenty of variety without having to leave the property.

Impression by Secrets is the best luxury all-inclusive resort on Isla Mujeres.

One thing to know before booking is that some guests report being approached about vacation club or timeshare presentations, sometimes disguised as complimentary experiences. It’s worth being aware of, especially if you’re not interested in a sales pitch. The resort also offers complimentary catamaran transfers from Cancun during scheduled hours, which is a nice perk. Like Zoëtry, Impression is better suited to a luxury resort vacation than a trip focused on exploring Isla Mujeres. If you want to spend your evenings trying the restaurants and bars in El Centro, I’d recommend staying on the north end instead.

LUXURY | ALL-INCLUSIVE | ADULTS ONLY | OCEANFRONT

SAC BAJO / SOUTH ISLAND

Hotel Beló

Hotel Beló is a modern beachfront hotel on Sac Bajo with a livelier atmosphere than the luxury resorts farther south. The rooms are contemporary, and you can book either room-only or all-inclusive rates, giving you the option to eat at local restaurants rather than paying for every meal at the hotel. There’s a swimming pool, a small beach, and several beach clubs nearby. The highlight is Top by Beló, the rooftop infinity pool and bar, with ocean views, Balinese beds, cocktails, and DJs. It’s also worth visiting if you’re staying elsewhere on the island.

Hotel Belo is an all inclusive resort that is one of the best hotels on Isla Mujeres.

The tradeoff is noise, especially when there are rooftop events or music playing at nearby beach clubs. The beach is fine for relaxing, but I wouldn’t compare it to Playa Norte. You’ll also need a taxi or golf cart to reach the restaurants and nightlife in El Centro.

The hotel occasionally hosts private adult-themed takeover events, when the entire property is reserved for a group, so it’s worth checking the event calendar before booking. I’d recommend Beló if you want a modern hotel with a social atmosphere, but not if you’re looking for a quiet resort getaway.

SAC BAJO / SOUTH ISLAND

Mayan Monkey

Mayan Monkey is an adults-only (18+) hostel on the south end of Isla Mujeres, combining affordable accommodations with a beachfront club that feels more like a resort than a typical hostel. It’s popular with solo travelers and groups looking for a social atmosphere, with shared dorms and private rooms, a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, and regular parties and activities. The beach club is a big part of the experience, with music, drinks, and plenty of opportunities to meet other travelers.

Mayan Monkey is a hostel in teh Sac Bejo area of Isla Mujeres

The downside is noise, especially during parties and events that can run late into the evening. The location is another consideration, since you’ll need a taxi or golf cart to reach Playa Norte and the main restaurant and bar scene in El Centro. If you want an affordable hostel closer to downtown, Nílu by Selina is the better choice. But if you’d rather spend your days at a beach club and don’t mind being farther from the action, Mayan Monkey is worth considering.

Zoëtry Villa Rolandi

Temporarily Closed for Renovations: Zoëtry Villa Rolandi is currently closed for property improvements, with a tentative reopening in 2027. Check the hotel’s website for updates before making travel plans.

Zoëtry Villa Rolandi is one of the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts on Isla Mujeres, located along the quieter Sac Bajo peninsula. The boutique resort has just 35 oceanfront suites, each with a private balcony or terrace, and some with Jacuzzis. Amenities include three swimming pools, a gym, and a full-service spa. The small beach isn’t as nice as Playa Norte, but it’s much quieter and more secluded. One of the highlights is Casa Rolandi, an upscale restaurant specializing in Northern Italian and Swiss cuisine. There’s also Le Métissage, which serves Mexican-French fusion dishes.

Hot tub at Zoetry Villa Rolandi, a luxury all-inclusive hotel on Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

Zoëtry is all-inclusive only, with gourmet dining, premium drinks, and even private yacht transfers from Cancun included in the experience. Given the resort’s location and amenities, it’s a good choice for couples looking for a relaxing getaway without spending much time off the property. But if it’s your first visit to Isla Mujeres and you want to explore the restaurants, bars, and beaches around El Centro, I’d recommend staying on the north end instead.

Rental Homes & VRBO on Isla Mujeres

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

If you’re traveling with a large family or group, renting a house or condo on Isla Mujeres is worth considering. You’ll have more space, a kitchen, and often a lower cost per person than booking several hotel rooms. Vacation rentals are also a good option for longer stays.

Be careful with rental listings on Facebook or unfamiliar websites, especially if someone asks you to send a deposit through a bank transfer or payment app. Fake listings do exist, and it can be difficult to recover your money if something goes wrong. I recommend booking through an established platform like VRBO and keeping payments on the platform.

A few vacation rental options worth considering:

  • Casa de Jaguar: A four-bedroom house near Punta Sur with a private infinity pool and ocean views. Sleeps up to nine guests.

  • Casa Sirena: A restored eight-bedroom house in El Centro with a courtyard, plunge pool, and rooftop terrace. A good choice for large groups who want to stay within walking distance of downtown.

  • Isla 33: An oceanfront condo complex in the mid-island area with swimming pools and spacious privately owned units. A good option for families or groups who don’t mind being farther from Playa Norte.

For more options, browse vacation rentals on Isla Mujeres through VRBO.

Staying on Isla Mujeres FAQ

Should I Book an All-Inclusive Resort on Isla Mujeres?

This is one of the most debated questions among people who visit Isla Mujeres regularly. Unlike Cancun, Isla Mujeres isn’t dominated by large all-inclusive resorts. A big part of visiting the island is spending the day at the beach and then heading into El Centro for dinner, drinks, and live music.

I generally recommend skipping the all-inclusive. Isla Mujeres has some excellent restaurants, and I’d rather spend my evenings eating at places like Limón, Lola Valentina, and Javi’s Cantina than pay for meals at a resort. Depending on how much you eat and drink, you may also spend less by going out.

That said, I understand the appeal of an all-inclusive, especially for families or anyone planning to spend most of their time at the hotel. Having drinks, snacks, and meals included is convenient, even if you still head into town for dinner occasionally.

For me, the deciding factor is how you plan to spend your time. If you want to explore the island’s restaurants and beach bars, I’d skip it. If you’re looking for a resort vacation where everything is taken care of, all-inclusive makes more sense.

What Are the All-Inclusive Resorts on Isla Mujeres?

Several hotels on Isla Mujeres offer all-inclusive packages, although some also let you book without one.

  • Zoëtry Villa Rolandi: A luxury boutique resort on Sac Bajo. Temporarily closed for renovations, with no confirmed reopening date.

  • Impression Isla Mujeres: An adults-only luxury resort on the southern coastline, with upscale dining, infinity pools, and ocean views. Formerly Impression by Secrets.

  • Hotel Beló: A modern waterfront hotel with a rooftop pool and bar. Offers both all-inclusive and room-only rates.

  • Mía Reef Isla Mujeres: An all-inclusive resort near Playa Norte, particularly popular with families with young children.

  • Privilege Aluxes: An adults-oriented hotel near Playa Norte offering both breakfast-included and optional all-inclusive stays.

Are There Cheaper Hotels Near Playa Norte?

Yes. There are several smaller hotels and guesthouses around Playa Norte and El Centro that are generally more affordable than the larger beachfront resorts. I haven’t stayed at these personally, but they’re worth considering if you’re looking for something less expensive.

You’ll also find basic rooms and small guesthouses scattered around El Centro. If you’re planning to spend most of your time at the beach or exploring the island, one of these may be all you need.

How Do I Get from the Ferry to My Hotel?

Most hotels around El Centro and Playa Norte are within walking distance of the ferry terminal, usually about 5 to 15 minutes. If you have heavy luggage, look for the maleteros, local porters with bicycle carts who can carry your bags while you walk alongside. They work for tips, so bring some pesos.

Mía Reef is a little farther away, near the northern tip of the island, and you’ll need to cross a short bridge to reach the resort. You can walk there with light luggage, but a taxi is easier if you’re carrying several bags.

If you’re staying around Sac Bajo or farther south, I’d recommend taking a taxi from the ferry terminal. There’s a taxi stand nearby, and you can arrange a ride to your hotel without needing to reserve transportation in advance. Always confirm the fare before getting in, since prices can vary by destination and driver.

Final Thoughts: Where to Stay on Isla Mujeres

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0

For a first visit to Isla Mujeres, I’d recommend staying near Playa Norte or El Centro. Janice and I preferred being able to walk to the beach, restaurants, and bars without needing a golf cart or taxi every time we wanted to go somewhere. The south end is worth considering if you want a quieter stay or prefer the amenities of an all-inclusive resort, but it’s a different experience from staying downtown.

If you’re still planning your trip, my Isla Mujeres travel guide covers transportation, the best time to visit, and other practical tips. For dining, check out my best restaurants on Isla Mujeres, and if you’re looking for activities beyond the beach, my best things to do on Isla Mujeres covers snorkeling, golf cart trips, and other places worth exploring around the island.
