The Best Restaurants

El Xolo

Cochnita Pibil and Crudo at El Xolo

El Xolo supports the indigenous people of El Salvador by sourcing ingredients from these communities, with a special focus on the native corn. Their version of El Salvadorean cuisine is made with a Mesoamerican influence, the region inhabited by the Maya, Zapotecs, and Aztecs that extends from central Mexico all the way down into northern Costa Rica.

You can find traditional dishes of the region, like cochinita pibil with corn tortillas from the Yucatan Peninsula. And there are also modern creations such as the El Salvadorean chicken soup known as Sopa Gallina that is made with chicken gyoza (dumplings) rather than pieces of chicken.

The crudo is more typical but incorporates macha ponzu and cilanto, creating one of my favorite dishes. And the chocolate tamale dessert with basil ice cream is a great way to end the meal. Of course you can also enjoy a Cordillera for a nightcap, a cocktail similar to a Carajillo that uses El Salvadorean coffee.

El Xolo is one of the top restaurants in El Salvador and ranked as the 59th best restaurant in Latin America for 2023 by 50 Best. It was my favorite meal in El Salvador.

Donde Mikel

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0
Donde Mikel began in Guatemala City, but has now opened one of the most popular restaurants in San Salvador.
Lomita at Donde Mikel

Donde Mikel is one of Guatemala City’s top restaurants and opened a San Salvador location in 2022. Though it is known for a casual atmosphere and simple food, don’t let this fool you about how great it is.

The menu is very uncomplicated, with a selection of large platters of meat and seafood that are meant to be shared. They include shrimp, skirt steak, baby squid and baby octopus. But the lomito, or beef tenderloin, served on a platter of garlic and oil might be the top choice. You can then order a variety of side dishes to accompany the main.

Donde Mikel is one of the best restaurants in San Benito to go in a group due to the sharing concept of the meal. While I believe El Xolo is the best restaurant in San Salvador, Donde Mikel is the one I would want to come to most often for a family dinner.

Brutto

Brutto is one of the top restaurants in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Tuna Roll & White Tuna Crudo at Brutto

Many people consider Brutta the best restaurant in San Salvador. And if your preference is for sushi or small seafood plates, you might agree. It certainly comes across as the most posh, though there is no dress code to keep me out when I stopped by wearing athletic shorts and a t-shirt in the middle of a rainstorm. Please note that this would not be my normal attire for a fancy restaurant, but the rainy season can alter plans at a moment’s notice!

The sushi menu is innovative, though a surprising number of them feature Philadelphia cream cheese for some reason. I personally prefer the torched Hamachi, crudo, or octopus carpaccio. But it’s not all seafood, as the larger plates do include a glazed short rib, skirt steak, and many other meat options.

Brutto began in Panama City, Panama and has another location in Aruba. And the CM Food Group behind them has a few other restaurant brands throughout El Salvador, Panama, Aruba, and Venezuela.

Lobby

Lobby is a popular bar and restaurant in Zona Rosa, San Salvador.
Smoked Wings at Lobby

While Donde Mikel may be the best restaurant for family gatherings, Lobby might be the best restaurant in San Benito for going out to dinner with friends. Each time I went there, nearly every table was groups of people aged late 20s and 30s. It’s definitely a young professional crowd that will also include some expats and tourists. Though there is a less busy bar area hidden in back that I love and feel should have be busier.

Lobby is fashioned in the style of an avant-garde hotel from the 1930’s United States. And the menu is that of a gastropub, where the burgers and pizza are two of the most popular items. The smoked wings are a great start. But there are also some more sophisticated options like salmon or beef carpaccio and a few sushi rolls.

Lobby would probably be my regular go-to option if I was solo, grabbing a meal with Janice, or even if I just wanted drinks.

Great Breakfast Spots

Roots Food Artisans

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0
Roots is a coffee shop in Zona Rosa that also offers some of the best breakfast in San Salvador.
Eggs Benedict at Roots

My very first breakfast in San Salvador ended up being at one of my favorite spots that I returned to a few times. Roots Food Artisans combines a coffee shop atmosphere and breakfast restaurant into one.

While they do offer a typical Salvadorean breakfast, the international influence can be seen with dishes like eggs Benedict, red or green shakshuka, and Lebanese eggs.

You can grab a quick coffee to go or stay. But if you’re hanging out for weekend brunch or perhaps, you’re a tourist who doesn’t have to go to work, they offer mimosas, sangria, and wine.

LUMA Panadería Experimental

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0
LUMA started as a bakery making sourdough bread. But they expanded to offer coffee and make great breakfast tostadas on their homemade bread.
Prosciutto Tostada at LUMA

LUMA Panadería Experimental is an innovative bakery and café in Zona Rosa. It began as a small experiment in baking sourdough bread in the founder’s kitchen before moving into this commercial space. The name LUMA combines the names Luis and mamá, reflecting its roots in family tradition. The bakery quickly expanded due to the popularity of its artisanal sourdough breads and creative offerings.

The menu includes a variety of sandwiches or open-faced tostadas served on their home-made sourdough, such as the prosciutto & egg or the Benedict with salmon. They also have pizza, chilaquiles, and a variety of baked goods as well as a full coffee bar.

The Green House

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0
The Green House is one of the best brunch restaurants in the San Benito area of San Salvador. It has a focus on health food and you can enjoy your meal in the tree filled backyard.
Huevos Rotos at the Green House

While the Green House is popular for having a health-conscious menu, don’t let that fool you into thinking that’s all it is. Sure, they have a menu of what they call “Booster Smoothies” as well as vitamin packed fruit juice concoctions. And the lunch menu has several pages dedicated to salads and protein bowls.

I’m someone who doesn’t generally like health food. So, if I can find plenty of breakfast items I like, then I’m sure you can too.

If you flip past the fruit bowls and egg white omelets, you will get to their version of Spanish Huevos Rotos which I truly enjoyed. Their take on Shakshuka comes in red or green sauce, seemingly influenced by chilaquiles. But it’s the selection of eight different toast varieties that are a highlight of the breakfast menu (avocado, serrano ham, tomato & bacon, etc).

And then the tables set around the outdoor garden surrounded by lush greenery puts this restaurant over the top for ambiance.

Delikat

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0
Delikat is a good restaurant for brunch in San Salvador and might have the best dessert pastries in the city.
Pastries at Delikat

Delikat is a restaurant with a European style menu with Mediterranean influences. The breakfast menu is small, with an entire section dedicated to eggs Benedicts. The French toast skewers are unique, though the icing makes them quite sweet. The strawberry crepes are as well, though less so.

But if you like sweet, the pastries and desserts are the reason to visit Delikat. Both the blueberry and strawberry tarts could be a light breakfast on their own and contain a good portion of fruit. But the passion fruit and coconut tart provides an excellent ending to brunch.

Or, if you prefer chocolate, the white chocolate & coffee mousse or dark chocolate mousse might convince you order an extra coffee or glass of wine so relax in the tree lined patio a bit longer.

Local Coffee Shops

Good Beans El Salvador Coffee

If you're in Zona Rosa, there is no better coffee shop that Good Beans El Salvador Coffee.
Good Beans El Salvador Coffee

Good Beans Coffee Shop is my favorite specialty coffee shop in this area of San Salvador. Known for its commitment to serving 100% Salvadoran specialty coffee, Good Beans prides itself on sourcing strictly high-grown, shade-grown beans from local producers, ensuring high quality and sustainable coffee practices. The shop emphasizes the use of locally sourced, organic, and Rainforest Alliance certified beans, which highlight the rich and unique flavors of Salvadoran coffee.

Biscuit Factory

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0
While the large selection of coffee drinks, with or without alcohol, help make this one of my favorite morning spots, they also offer some good food.
Biscuit Factory

Biscuit Factory originally began in 1999 as a bakery on the outskirts of San Salvador. They focused on traditional Salvadorean breads from family recipes and eventually expanded into coffee. This became a hit, and it has perhaps the best selection of specialty coffee drinks in the area. You’ll find a long list of hot drinks like a vanilla spice latte, mint mochaccino, or white chocolate & macadamia latte. They serve many of their creations iced, plus shakes and frappes.

And since they serve alcohol, you can go straight to an Irish Coffee, a Carajillo, or simply add Bailey’s to any of the coffee drinks.

To go along with the coffee, Biscuit Factory offers a variety of bite-sized pastries and delicious breakfasts. Though it is open for dinner as well.

Nightlife & Live Music

Republik

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0
Republik is one of the most popular bars in San Salvador. They have live music each night.
Republik

Since it moved to this location in 2008, Republik has become one of the top nightlife spots in Zona Rosa. While it is a self-proclaimed Irish Pub and has the decorations of one, this is somewhat of a misnomer. You won’t even find hard cider or Guiness here.

But what you will find is a beautiful wooden bar that was salvaged and restored from a club that was destroyed during the Salvadorean Civil War in 1989.

The main draw, though, is the live music each night from Tuesday through Saturday. They are generally tribute bands playing Salvadorean or International artists, and the place can get packed. I was there for Taylor Swift night and the crowd was going nuts. I’d love to make it to the Metallica Tribute band here.

With a wide selection of whiskies, cocktails, and even a shot menu, Republik keeps the party going until 2am. I highly recommend booking a table in advance. Most events have a $10 cover. And take note that there is a dress code, so don’t show up in shorts and flip flops.

If you’re into music and nightlife, then Republik is the closest thing to a must-go bar in San Benito.

Cocktail Bar

Nómada

Created with Fabric.js 4.6.0
Nomada is one of the best cocktail bars in San Salvador. It has a romantic atmosphere. The Carrot-Top (pictured) is an example of the unique cocktails they serve here.
The Carrot-Top Cocktail at Nómada

Nómada is a trendy cocktail bar in Zona Rosa. Like many of the restaurants here, you enter through a somewhat non-descript front door before entering the main dining room. And just a few more steps take you to the stylish and welcoming outdoor courtyard.

One of the major attractions of Nómada is its diverse selection of cocktails, which make it one of best cocktail bars in San Salvador. The bartenders have creativity and skill, and each drink is a unique experience.

There is a small food menu comprised of mostly small plates which can be shared. Nómada makes for a romantic evening or for a night out with friends.

Breweries

Cadejo Brewing Co

Cadejo Brewing Company is the largest craft brewery in Central America and has many locations in El Salvador.
Cadejo Brewing Co

Founded in 2013 in the upscale San Salvador neighborhood of San Benito, Cadejo is the largest craft brewery in Central America. It has now expanded to several locations throughout El Salvador plus one in Guatemala. Though most bars sell only the National beers and maybe a few select imports, Cadejo can sometimes be found at them as well. They brew several styles, and I suggest trying a flight.

Squirrel Eye Brewing

Squirrel Eye Brewing is a new microbrewery in San Salvador.
Squirrel Eye Brewing

Squirrel Eye Brewing is an independent microbrewery based in Zona Rosa, that makes a selection of craft beers across several styles. Some favorites are the Neipah New England IPA, ok! Monk Belgian Blonde, and the five oh! three Hoppy Pilsner. They also release some seasonal brews.

The atmosphere is mostly tables with a minimalist bar setting. You can pair the beers with pizza, burgers, tacos, or items to share with the table.

San Salvador’s craft beer scene has had difficulty growing, as the overall market is dominated by the National brands and then Cadejo claims most of the market share for craft beer. Squirrel Eye Brewing is trying to make a name for itself and regularly participates in beer tasting tours, where visitors can enjoy samplers of their signature brews while learning about the brewing process.
