Kingston was the original capital of New York in 1977. Later that year the city was burned by the British during the Revolutionary War and ultimately the capital was moved to Albany in 1797.
Today, Kingston home to many historic churches, boutique shops, and some great restaurants. Although it doesn’t attract the same number of tourists as some other areas along the Hudson River, it’s a great place for a weekend getaway.

Overview: Best Hotels in Kingston
What is the Best Area to Stay in Kingston?
Stockade District: This is the most walkable area of Kingston. The area is also commonly referred to as Uptown Kingston. There are only a few accommodations in this area, but if you want to be walking distance to many restaurants and shops then this is the best neighborhood to stay. Hotel Kinsley and the Wiltwyck have the best location. But if you prefer a more budget conscious option, the Super 8 and Best Western are only about a 15 minute walk.
Downtown / Rondout: This is the waterfront area that has many art galleries, restaurants, and the river cruise. After the Stockade District, this is the next most walkable area. But accommodations are extremely limited, with just a couple Bed & Breakfast style accommodations nearby.
Rt 9W North of Kingston: If you don’t care about staying on the outskirts, then many of the larger hotel chains are located on Rt 9 just north of Kingston. Technically, most of these are actually in the town of Ulster but have Kingston addresses. The Courtyard by Marriott, Residence Inn, and Hampton Inn are all decent mid-level options.
Best Hotels in Kingston
#1 Hotel Kinsley
Hotel Kinsley is often regarded as the best hotel in Kingston as well as my top pick for best overall hotel. It is not a typical hotel, but rather the rooms are spread among four historic buildings within a few blocks of each other. Each building has its own unique charm.
- 301 Wall St: This 19th century bank building has been restored to become the main building of the hotel. This is where you check-in and also where the restaurant & bar are located. There are 10 rooms in this building.
- 41 Pearl St: With 13 rooms, this is the largest building. This brick building form the 1680’s also required the largest restoration effort. This is where the gym, sauna, and spa are located.
- 271 Fair St: 12 rooms located above a boutique clothing shop.
- 24 John St: With 7 rooms, this building is a European style cottage that was rebuilt after being burned to the ground in the Revolutionary War. This is the most recent addition to Hotel Kinsley.

#2 The Wiltwyck
The Wiltwyck is a family-owned boutique inn located on the edge of the Stockade district. The inn has four room options: two single bed suites, a two-bedroom suite with kitchen, and a self-contained one-bedroom apartment with living room and kitchen.
The location can’t be beat. Many of the best restaurants and shops are within a couple blocks as well as a coworking space right across the street. The Wiltwyck is an ideal option for both price and location.

#3 Hutton Brickyards Retreat & Spa
Hutton Brickhouse is the most scenic hotel in Kingston, as it’s located alongside the Hudson River. It might also be the most unique. Rooms are located in three unique spaces:
Edgewood Mansion contains 12 guest rooms plus the restaurant & bar.
The Cottage is the most spacious accommodation for up to four guests. The downstairs bedroom features a king bed and the upstairs loft has a queen. There is also a large living room and an outdoor courtyard.
Cabins situated along the Hudson River make up most of the guest rooms. They are offered as both king or queen sized.
Hutton Brickyards is the most hit or miss accommodation on this list. There is a large event space that hosts many weddings and corporate events in the summer, which can interfere with the peacefulness that guest may desire. This especially affects the cabins which are located nearby. But generally the accommodations are very nice, and the restaurants is fantastic (you don’t need to be a guest to dine at the restaurant).

Other Hotels Near Kingston
These are all mid-range hotels located on Rt 9W just to the north of Kingston. They are a short 15-minute drive from the restaurants and shops in the Stockade District. But they are ideal places to stay if you plan to spend your time exploring the Hudson Valley region rather than just Kingston.
